If you add ex-wives to this list, that’s the recipe for a dead silent 4 day.

The reason this country is so damn divided these days is because ppl are too scared to talk to each other about differences. There’s nothing wrong with talking about politics of you can have a rational adult conversation about it. You’ll actually find we agree on far more than we disagree.

This....
I’ve always treated politics as a personal challenge to drill down to the base level ideals and then build back up from there.
MOST of the time, there is a solid base that even the most vehemently opposing views can agree on.
I need a good challenge on 4 hour legs!

You essentially laid out a directive as Captain and somehow validated that nobody challenged you on it? I've been in the left seat for over 12 years now, but previously served 18 years involuntary in the right. One thing for sure is if I got a predeparture brief like that, I'd tune you out for everything except what I was specifically required to and laugh my arse off at you until I could finally escape.

I'll listen and respond to anything. If it becomes a distraction inflight such as more than one missed call in cruise, I'll dial it back and it absolute terms, will not spin it up to create a interpersonal problem for the remainder of the sequence. Otherwise, any discussion is fair as long as it is respectful and does not interfere with crew performance. Any Captain letting something spin up amongst the crew is failing in his/her duty and IMHO, blanket and stifling directives just causes problems to fester. The cockpit isn't a liquored up Irish bar, discussions can be managed, even if by the FO if things need to dial back.

Biggest thing is if one really feels the need to discuss anything beyond a superficial level, hit the "INT" selector on your selector panel

Kids? what if the other pilot is unable to have kids and you'll just dredge up deep pain?
Can't talk about cars since they pollute, either out the tail pipe or due to mining of lithium, and obviously you don't care about the environment if you're a gear head.
Shooting? you must be an ultra right wing freak who thinks the government is out to get them.
Military stories? War monger.
Lawn Care tips? Shouldn't you be xeroscaping?
Food? you'll offend the level 5 vegans
BINGO. This is the pathetic society we live in. Persistently walking on eggshells with your words (for those of us that actually give a $7!t).

Wow. You fly airplanes. Scary.

Listen. Don’t tell me about the “lessons” from communist countries unless you’ve lived under it like I have. ZERO clue about how much we’re pi$$ing away this country.....

You should’ve asked him if he likes “stuff”.
