The SWA section of PPrune has gone down the path of turning, and I don’t think I’m exaggerating, every thread into an extreme right wing echo chamber. Yes, that’s it exactly! Progressives and libs are all about disenfranchising minorities while White Christian conservatives want nothing more than to spread the bounty of this great land of ours.

And Blacks were way happier before the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act came along and messed things up for everybody by giving them all these crazy ideas that they could actually participate on an even playing field.

And the Civil War wasn’t about slavery—it was about protecting “a way of life.”

And, while we’re here, the Holocaust may or may not have happened, I dunno, they may have faked all those photos at Auschwitz, you just never know.

Its funny. I actually agreed with the first two paragraphs. But then read the last two sentences and realized it was sarcasm.

I’ll agree. The left, I believe, genuinely wants to help those that are disaffected. It’s just that the policies they implement always seem to have the unintended consequences of leaving those same folks in the lurch. If you believe this spending spree and policies that we have been watching the last three months is not going to malign the bottom 15%, I just don’t know what to tell you.

Inflation will hurt those that can’t invest in the market (gas and lumber are already moving at a nice clip). Wages will stagnate again due to lack of legal immigration enforcement (was at a 20 year high in 2019). Incentivizing single parent homes will have the same effect it did in the sixties (generational poverty, but at least the next generation will vote Democrat!). Just look at the impact the federal government has had on the price of health care and college the last forty years. Only the rich are in a place to afford it solely due to federal involvement believing they know better.

A little trivia history for you... In Congress, which party showed higher support for the Civil Rights Act? History can surprise sometimes.

No, I know my history. But that GOP was a different beast than the one we have today. It was the party of Northern big business and, before that, the party of Northern abolitionism. It had always been extremely moderate socially and was almost exclusively the party of WASPS.

The Democratic Party, meanwhile, was the party of the South, the party of Catholics, the party of the working-class (white) man. It was thoroughly regressive socially even as it upheld the rights and privileges of a mostly white working class.

If you.were White back then, it was a beautiful thing:. The worst excesses of Big Business and the very rich were held in check by a broad coalition of working class people. The middle class flourished. But anyone who was not white was SOL.

Now here’s my question for you: when and why did all those working-class whites defect to the GOP? What upset a status quo which had held since the end of the Civil War?
