Being an airline pilot isn’t only a job. It’s a whole lifestyle commitment. We all know that by now, right? I would have thought we would have had that figured out by the time our first ever paycheck cleared. If you don’t want it, leave. I say that with no malice.

Last summer we were offered an amazing opportunity to step off this BS lifestyle and to get generously paid to do so. Hundreds took it. I nearly took it even though I’ve only been here 4 years. I’m 54 and this job has cost me a lot. But generally I like it and, most importantly, I knew what I was signing on to when I took my first airline job a long time ago.

It’s not like we didn’t know what we were signing up for, is it?

Life is too short to be miserable and odds are if you’re miserable at work you’re miserable to work with. Find a new path but don’t let your misery seep through to your co-workers.

I don’t want to hear about hating being on the road when being on the road is exactly what being an airline pilot is. It is, by definition, a vagabond lifestyle. Don’t want it? Find something new. I know many who have and I don’t believe any regret it.

Well I'm not meant to be some free-spirited nomad like so many of the guys I flew with seem to be. I feel like a loser man

Been doing this for a living since 1996... 25 years for more airlines than I care to count. Still slinging gear in a 737. Still love it most of the time. There's nothing I'd rather do to earn a buck.

At this point there won't be any big expensive toys or lake homes before I retire. But I've always been able to keep food on the table and a roof over our heads. In this business, that ain't nothing.

Why won’t there be any big toys or houses? My biggest fear would be looking back and realizing I didn’t make decent money.

Maybe you are trolling after all...
My biggest fear is that my choices resulted in a poor quality of life for my family. Toys and McMansions don't factor in.

I’m not trolling. I just like hearing what others have experienced.

I don’t have many family members and no dependents, so maybe it’s that our priorities are different. Still, thank you for sharing.

You didn’t have to tell us you live alone in your Mom’s basement.... we already knew that.

Troll somewhere else.

And practice more....your game is weak.

It sounds like you really deserve that. Hopefully it will fall on your lap so you won’t have to actually go work for it like the rest of us.

There is nothing worse in life than wanting something and not having it given to you.
