Think about it: you’re only getting paid from door shut to open. The rest of the time you’re effectively working for free in a form of indentured servitude. That’s why I hate hotels and traveling with a passion: I’m not getting paid for it!

Makes me realize what a freaking sucker I was all those years.
Not too many professions pay you for your hotel time. Maybe the oldest one, that’s about it.

Well, If you go to fly a 19.5 paying 3 day trip. And day 1 they cancel the entire thing, you're still paid for that trip rigs and all and I never closed the door. So the whole "Door Closed-Door Open" thing doesn't really matter. Now for block... and overfly... yeah.

For the companies sake, I hope we do the trip. But I couldn't care less. I am paid a minimum time regardless of what happens.

Pretty sure most decent airlines operate on a similar thing.

SLC is great but the walk to the bus almost makes it not worth it. And I'm not a fat **** either.

Compared to the 7 years I spent at a regional, Ive experienced very few cancellations, very few negative interactions with scheduling, very few maintenance issues and no issues with any chiefs. I’m in year six.

Im supportive of our union, and have had very few interactions with pilots that were problem children.

The regional side (and then my near decade in corporate) had many worse experiences.

The worst hotel experiences I’ve had at the Southwestern Trailways were all due to the Chinese Virus and the hotels have all been better than the domestic regional days (except the year I spent in SJU—St. Vincent, Barbados, Grenada, Antigua, St. Lucia etc).

Just make sure anytime you're on a call with Chief or Scheduling, it's on a recorded line. The niceness and open-door policy is merely a façade meant to encourage cooperation. Similar to how a police officer can act friendly and lie to try and get a person to admit guilt.

I never speak to a chief pilot without my attorney present on a recorded line. It’s expensive insurance but probably totally worth it.

Smart man. A three-way call with a voice disguiser is probably the best insurance you can have.

Compare yourself to a salesman traveling 5 days, every week. Or over the road truck driver sleeping in their rig.

I'm comparing myself to someone who has the luxury of sleeping in their own bed every night. You know, someone who has a real career. I'm sorry, I just get bitter when I think of all the time I wasted in these hotels, working for free.

If you're senior to me, you can quit.
