In a previous life, at the opening of Section 6, the company threw in a demand that pilots be held personally responsible financially for any damage they caused the company. That was an obviously egregious stipulation they knew would never end up in any final language but it made the pilots feel like they’d won something when the company dropped it later on. Don’t let that happen here.
He goes over techniques like these in detail and other effective, and not so effective strategies that I’ve seen airlines attempt.

Some airlines like ours offered ETO or EXTO to limit paying people more for doing nothing. Others were just going to furlough until the unions offered alternatives.

Not at full guarantee they haven’t. There’s a difference between extended leave at half pay for a fraction of employees and paying every employee guarantee for 6 months without trying to curb costs. Legacies plan was always to furlough when the govt cheese ran out...

I chuckled when I watched it.
Sorry Dave, the answer is hell no!
Our non-contract employees/management haven't suffered from the deliberate overstaffing. Southwest pilots did by losing pay and consequently retirement contribution and Profit Sharing.
Our non-contract employees/management haven't suffered from the grounding of the MAX. Southwest pilots did by losing pay and consequently retirement contribution and Profit Sharing.
When Boeing paid Southwest Airlines part of the MAX settlement, our CEO decided to add this money into Profit Sharing pool which gets split with all employees of Southwest Airlines even though the only employee groups adversely affected by this grounding were pilots and flight attendants given how our compensation package works. In other words, our non-contract/management CoHearts received a windfall.
So now that Gary wants concessions because of "fairness", sorry Gary, but non-contract/management employees taking 10% paycut doesn't come close to the net effect of deliberate overstaffing combined with the MAX grounding on our pilot and flight attendant groups. Sorry non-contract/management CoHearts, but welcome to the suck. Our concession stand is closed. Now send me my WARN notice so I can frame it.

Green bars have been decreasing. Point is you’re not collecting a full month of guarantee to turn 0 switches like some of my friends are. One is a UAL new hire who never made it to IOE....been collecting min guarantee and hasn’t flown a UAL jet...ever. He’ll have to do the full course again whenever things turn around...prob well after he hits 2nd yr pay.

Extended leave at half pay sure sounds like paying guys to sit around and do nothing. But what do I know?
