When were those bases closed? How long had they been open? Were they closed “at the drop of a hat?” I’m most interested in Delta, United, American, and Southwest, the four pax airlines generally considered to be part of the “Big 6” (not to take anything away from AK, F9, B6, NK pilots, as those are very much excellent places to work).

Almost all of those bases were closed as part of the "synergies" of mergers. If two hub airlines merge, often there are duplicate hubs that make more sense to service from a combined super hub. If you think one of the legacies is about to merge with another hub/spoke airline, then there can indeed be base closures, but we're nearing the age (barring any catastrophic industry collapse) where most of the Big 6 will not be allowed to merge unless a failure is imminent.
One airline might be setting up for this as we speak.

Was MKE ever a WN base….or was it just something that was closed as part of the merger? AT also had a TPA base.

AFAIK, DL in DFW wasn’t merger related. Nor was UAL in SEA.
Be interesting to see what happens to AK when the 320’s are all gone…if they keep all the bases open.
B6 recently closed LGB and opened LAX…also not merger related.

This mgt group seems to not know what they’re doing and just throw darts at a board hoping something they do will make people happy. It’s not working….

Drop of a hat was a tongue in cheek comment. Usually bases are shrunk down to the bare minimum and cling to death for years before someone pulls the plug. For an airline that uses “stability” as a talking point, opening a bunch of bases in a year is a big move. Last base we opened was LAX like 5 yrs ago.

If anything, UAL’s attempt at incentivizing CA upgrades via LAS and MCO 737 domiciles is smart thinking.

Yeah, that was sorta my point. You said legacies open and close bases at the drop of a hat… given none have closed since the various bankruptcies/mergers, that’s a bit extreme. I guess we will see what happens to LAS and MCO with UAL, but it’s not like UAL is close to closing CLE (are they?), nor AA close to closing BOS/PHX/whatever, nor Delta close to closing SEA, despite the constant predictions of the airliners.net wannabe armchair CEO travel blogger crowd.

Wow, had no clue CVG was a delta domicile that recently. I assumed it closed more than a decade ago. I’ve been through there a couple times before 2020 and after and it looked like a scene out of that cheesy Langoliers movie. Total ghost town.
