Pilot bases are relatively cheap. If the company won't give us a competitive (let alone industry leading) contract, what's a way the company can guarantee we're the absolute do or die first choice destination airline for every single pilot who lives in MCI, STL, and BNA?
Why do you think United opened up a crew base in MCO and will be opening up a base in TPA? Throw the chump change of a couple million a year and now United can advertise bases where TONS of pilots live.
Let's say $10m a year to guarantee that every MO/TN/northern MS/southern IL/KS pilot will flock to swa contract be darned? Much cheaper than a contract.
Yes it'll be good for our pilot group too, but don't think that ANY decision made by this company first and foremost thinks of how it will help them.

What domiciles will they draw down in order to staff BNA, MCI, and STL?
DAL has 700 pilots in each seat right now, which seems pretty high. Wouldn't be surprised to see them cut a couple hundred from both seats to add to BNA. Hoping I won't be displaced.
The mother of all vacancy bids will be an unfortunate distraction for this pilot group at the worst possible time.

any of those bases would come from MDW, HOU, DAL, maybe DEN. but with how many they are adding each month it would be felt for long.

Up until a couple years ago you could say that about furloughs and demanded pay cuts too. I don't put anything past this management team any more, unfortunately.

I originally submitted this reply a few days ago but due to this being a new account it wasn’t approved until now:
Thanks for the responses. From reading around here over the past few years I’ve deduced that there can be some early starts and late finishes based on the AM/PM construct, but I’m trying to figure out if lines are built like this to begin with.
For example, on a 3 or 4 day AM trip, is it typical for each day to start consistently early at, say, 4am? Or do some lines have trips which start later in the morning? From looking at the MaxGumby site, it looks like United’s NB lines have some breadth in terms of start times while still being “AM” in nature.
What I’m really getting at is this: I’ve long viewed SWA’s AM/PM schedules as a great way to mitigate my strong desire to avoid red-eye flying. Additionally, I don’t have the itch to fly widebodies/international. However, I’m wondering if another major would eventually offer better schedules once seniority allowed for red-eye avoidance. Being able to compare awarded schedules between the airlines would be helpful which is why I inquired about a site similar to MaxGumby for SWA.
I appreciate all of your sincere responses.

In my opinion we need higher pay overrides for this flying and in reality, a third shift as AM/PM just doesnt cover it. We are basically a 4am-2am scheduled company.

Honestly seniority doesnt do much for you here in terms of what time you will be getting up, unless we are talking the extreme high end. In addition, I would say that on any given 3/4 day trip, your awake time stays about the same on AM's, which is to say super early. I avoid the PM stuff like a plague so I can't speak much to that, other than to say what little I have done is filed with delays on each leg and late, red eye like finishes. It is less and less uncommon for you to meet the AM crew while getting off the van as a PM crew, so think about that. We are essentially doing red eyes now, just not officially called that.

As a die hard PMer, your description of PMs is 100% accurate.
Being on time is truly an anomaly these days, and even if you eventually catch up, one of the many slipping cogs in the machine (occupied gate, no rampers/headset, bags, wx, connects etc.) will almost always ensure that you are late again.
I am scheduled to land after 0200 body clock time tomorrow morning. I will be surprised if we get to the hotel before 0400.

True…I just wasn’t sure with the 727’s back in the day if a base had closed. Up to now I don’t think we’ve closed a base once opened. You’re right about what could happen….

Can you provide examples? Which legacy closed a base and when? How recently is “at the drop of a hat”?

DL: CVG, MEM, DFW
UA: MIA, SEA, CLE
AA: STL, SFO
AK: all of the east coast VX bases
F9: ORD
B6/NK: remains to be seen
And to be fair, WN: MKE

When were those bases closed? How long had they been open? Were they closed “at the drop of a hat?” I’m most interested in Delta, United, American, and Southwest, the four pax airlines generally considered to be part of the “Big 6” (not to take anything away from AK, F9, B6, NK pilots, as those are very much excellent places to work).
