If true, this is unsustainable.
On reserve, it has become a game choosing what your body needs the most; food, sleep, or exercise. You cannot have all. You have to go without one or two of those choices. This is how they’re making up for the shortage of crews.
Any losses in training costs of the departed ones, they’ll simply take out of our PS. Problem solved, what pilot shortage?

but yes, I agree. I recently called in fatigued and the solution was to have me deadhead to a different city for a shorter overnight than was originally scheduled. Needless to say I asked to just take my rest right where I was as opposed to taking the deadhead.
Best night of sleep I've had in a long while.

Don't mess with it.
If you're tired, take no unnecessary risk and call fatigued. Even though it's not required, I always fill out their fatigue report form. Lack of nutrition, lack of quality sleep, accommodations, schedules... all are very valid reasons for the fatigue call. Don't be a hero.

Exactly! The company boasts about the "industry-leading fatigue policy" so God help you if something happens because you were fatigued and didn't call it. You will be hung and fried for failing to utilize the fatigue policy.

Do they deadhead you back home or extend your trip?

And don’t let them schedule your return to duty on the assumption you should be rested by a certain time. It can’t determine in advance when you’ll be fatigued in order to schedule wisely and likewise it can’t be determined in advance when you’ll be recovered.
I tell them I need sufficient rest and I’ll let them know when I’ve had it. Especially if they try to put you to rest outside your circadian rhythm.
I can’t be up to the wee hours and get a good day’s rest, I need a good night’s rest before I’m sufficiently recovered.

I had to do it at my last job. They were flipping my body clock every week, thus I was fatiguing every week. And their fatigue "recovery" was an automatic 14 hours off -- no more, no less -- often necessitating a second fatigue call to actually get back in line with my circadian rhythm. Scheduling can absolutely prevent 99% of the fatigue conditions, so I feel no guilt when I have to pull the plug on their behalf. My goal every trip is to not end up on the news, and getting proper rest is an important part of that!
