Base additions/removals?
#14
The Network Planning guy came to recurrent training this week to answer questions. He mentioned every time a new base is considered the contending cities are ranked and scored based on a series of operational parameters and requirements.
When this was done last, the winning city was MCI, followed by LAX and STL third. Due to ETOPS operations, LAX had to be chosen among the three, despite MCI scoring ahead.

I don’t get MCI. We just don’t do much there compared to other focus cities. Maybe if/when the new terminal gets built there’ll be expansion but I don’t see it.
DAL - HOU is 208 nm
MDW - STL is 218 nm
I don’t get why people say STL is too close to MDW to be a base when DAL/HOU are closer. We do more flights out of STL than we did in LAS/DEN when those two became bases.

Is both a good connecting spot through the Midwest as well as being in Chicago, a city a lot of people actually go to. That’s what network planning guy told us

I would like to see the source on that. Not saying it isn’t possible. It just sounds far fetched. SAN is gate and runway constrained and is located in the corner pocket of CONUS. It has a lot of cool things like a rabidly loyal customer base of OE traffic and great weather, but it sucks for connections because our gates are currently divided between three separate security screens. It will never be a traditional base.
STL has more gates, more runways, and a huge growth potential. All that and it is located in a prime spot for connections (we don’t do hub and spoke, though).
I don’t think we will see a new crew base open up for years, if ever.
