I know - nuances......

Um. Pretty sure this is a SWA thread and not a United, Westjet or Air Canada thread. So alas, I’ll say it again. The MAX isn’t certified for ETOPS yet and wasn’t in our plans for Hawaii until August at the earliest.

I picked SWA over AA, AS, DL, UA, and FDX. Almost 5 years later, I’m still happy with my decision and I think it was the right one for me. I think JB has a fantastic inflight product and they have a cool niche. I don’t think their new contract is amazing, mostly because of what they got in exchange for submitting to the PBS beast. But it’s a very good contract.

I think the other companies I turned down are awesome, some more than others, but from what I’ve learned in my first few years.... I’m very happy with my SWA decision. And I tell my buddies the same thing and why.

This thread turned ugly a while ago, hopefully you got some good information from it and made the best choice for you. Along with the rest of the readers following along.

There are a couple of serial commenters on here that are just better to ignore rather than take what they say as anything truthful or close to reality. A couple of actual SWA pilots who are real Debbie Downers, for their own reasons, and a few more who like to just waste people’s time online.
I agree with the first part. B6 is better living in BOS/NYC/ New England. Otherwise go else where.

No disrespect to the SWA guys, but I think if I ever left Blue, I'd go to UAL/AA/DAL. Southwest has a great product (and I buy full fare tickets on you twice a year, I like it so much). However, as a pilot, I think the Legacies have a bigger upside.

Keep in mind, YMMV and do whats best for you, not what anonymous people on a message board tell you.

FYI- Just had a friend of mine who I knew from my regional days leave SWA after 7 months and go to UAL. Same sort of thing is happening at Blue.

You’re right, it is what’s best for you that matters. In my case I chose SWA over UAL. I like shorter trips and more days off. Ask your friend how many 4 day trips he does at UAL vs SWA. Ask him if he can get 18days off a month all year even as a newb...

It’s not about what he’s getting as a newbie or short term...this person is looking at the next 5-20 years and what United offers with their massive retirement schedule, multiple aircraft options, upgrade opportunities. He or she is playing the long game.

I think he had issues with the word "certified" vs "approved". I think he might be right.

Nope. The MAX isn't certified for ETOPS at Southwest Airlines.

Wish someone smarter than me could confirm, but AFAIK:
MAX is certified for ETOPS,
SWA MAX has not been added to the opspecs and therefore not approved for ETOPS

Yes, the Entire 737 MAX line(7,8,9,10) are certified for ETOPS. Individual tail numbers must be added to the “approved for etops” list at each air carrier that has an “approved” etops program. Tail numbers are added and withdrawn regularily from that list for a whole host of reasons....
