When scheduling goes into crisis mode, they just let the computer give them solutions and don't have time to QC them. I have been rerouted into some interesting solutions as well that made absolutely no sense. If I see a glaring error in the solution, I will ask about it. Sometimes they will put me on hold and come back with either a better plan or an explanation at least. If they are in panic mode, they will usually just tell me to pound sand (politely). The computer (the Baker) will not check for contractual compliance, only for 117 legality.
Some of my favorites (for unscheduled overnights and JA):
Has this been run through open time?
Are there any available reserves that can fly this?

I'd stick around on reserve if we could ELITT reserve blocks. The pay on reserve is good, I've been used every day this year so far. Also, at-least one trip per month will "blow up", and I'll get paid 35+ trips for a 4 day where I block less then 10. I always end up with plenty of DH.
You have to watch them, I check my schedule pretty frequently while on a reserve assignment and always check what they've done before answering their calls, so I can resolve any contractual issues right away.

AM reserve? AM's seem to sit more as you drop dead so early because of the god-awful early RAP. You're out of time before things have a chance to screw up.

Reserve sucks for commuters. There is just no way around it. The lack of control that you have over your schedule makes it difficult.
I commute and I will never voluntarily bid reserve again.
Once we have the new system (starts at the end of the month) for call out and a true pass/fly preference, it will be much better, but still not commuter friendly.
