The elephant in the room is this new training center being built. Something is in the mix with all these simulators being brought in. When that is up and running, it is anyone's guess on hiring numbers and growth. As stated, hopefully it is internal and the rumored "1000" pilots a year can become reality. Well, we can hope...
There are still AirTran captains who downgraded when they came over who have yet to upgrade again. We need all of them to upgrade and the fleet to be equal to what it was when the 717s were still in the mix. Those will ratchet up the upgrade time for a few years before it begins to fall again. We just don't have the retirements that the legacies do to drive upgrades. Best we can hope for is a "third shift" (red eyes) to increase aircraft utilization. That block hour increase is the equivalent of adding more airplanes and will yield additional upgrades, new hires, and should also necessitate a third shift of reserves.

Sure can't argue with that. Hard to understand why they're doing all of the hiring they are doing now, much less the hiring that could be done with almost double the number of sims.
At least it'll have a cafeteria!

Prob for the same reason DL hired 1100 last year with only 400 retirements. Get ahead of the shortage and staffed for possible growth I'm guessing. Certainly not going to argue with a few hundred more below me every year.

Someone broke it down on the FB group I believe, but when you take into account retirements, some attrition that is still going to occur, and an aging pilot group, the hiring makes sense even with an airframe reduction.
SWA generally runs on a lean staffing model. They don't hit the retirement bubble for like 7-8 more years due to having a relatively young group, so it wouldn't make sense to hire like Delta is right now.
I think we are going to see an uptick in hiring in a few years due to planned growth, some increased retirements, longer stage lengths, and utilizing aircraft during periods where we normally do the nightly SWA reset.

Google WINGS building.
SWA has 12 sims now of which 3 are classics. (so going away) The new WINGS building will have 18 sims to start with, space for 26. Basicly they are doubling their NG sims. At current rate they can train (max) about 800 pilots if they go year round. So add this building and all those new sims.... There is growth in the future.

If SW were to merge, the other carrier likely has a simulator facility too. No reason to bring everybody to Mecca just to train them.
I think that it is inevitable that a second fleet type will join the mix. The Airbus is a terrific platform. It has better range than the 737 and the pax like it better. A second fleet type protects the company. If an AD grounds the 737, at least the company wouldn't be completely shut down.
If SW were to merge with Spirit (I think more likely than B6) I would not be surprised to see us keep the 320/321 and do away with the 319.

Or, if history repeats itself, we'll just sell off the Airbi for pennies on the dollar to AA/DL/UA (and pay for the retrofit), then send all of those pilots to the WINGS complex to learn how to really fly.
Sorry, I shouldn't be so jaded, but I am 3 green beers deep. For those trying to get on board, SWA is a great place to work. I haven't flown with a "bad" captain yet. I can't say the same for my bros over at mother Delta. Some of the stories I've heard over there blow my mind.
