I'm pretty sure new hires do not qualify for per diem untill the initial type ride is passed. This was the biggest issue for new hires going to Paris on 175. They were forced to spend upwards of $70 on three basic meals.

No you don't. You seem to be pretty misinformed about some of these new hire issues.

My friend was told you get per diem in training. Is that not the case?

We were also paid per diem during ground school, sim, and flight training (yep, we actually flew the real plane for a few nights before our final checkride in the actual airplane - how things have changed, lol). We were put in single occupancy rooms. And we never paid a dime for any of our company manuals (some airlines actually CHARGED their pilots for Jepps?).
Lets see!! Comair, ASA, XTJ were all pay for training, yes you pay!! ($7500-10,00).. thats why i chose Eagle also.. but back then SKY, mesa was no pay tell after ioe,

According to the email I just received when I asked, I was told I am still under new hire status so until checkride is passed. No.
