I voted no. Now that it passed, what do we have to negotiate with?

Even with a union we're still a sub-contractor...only regional I can think of that hit one out of the ballpark was COMAIR.

Never say never. We are a lot of guys at OO waiting for an ALPA drive. Last time we had one the vote rules at the time did not allow ALPA in but if the new voting rules that we have now would have been in place back then we would have been an ALPA carrier. SAPA has lost a lot of support among the pilots since change of its president and the way it has been working since. It has become more clear that it is a Company tool more than a pilot union. There is nothing anyone can do to make it better, the former president did the best I have seen and was voted out. SAPA is paid by the company. It is a conflict in itself.
When it comes to ALPA. People that complain about paying 2% for alpa dues can go out and try to buy loss of license/certificate insurance and legal representation insurance by them self and see how much it cost. Just the value of those two things makes it worth the 2%. The ability to stop the company in the violations of agreements and to have pro negotiators available is also benefits.

You cannot compare Skywest with other regionals and say "look at how much ALPA did at so and so". Skywest is not like other regionals, it makes profits every quarter and it is the hen with the golden eggs for Inc. We the pilots that makes Skywest airlines great need protection in form of insurances and pro negotiators. We need compensation for at least what we lose because of inflation. We need lawyers that are not paid by the company. Enough is enough. We are good workers and we are insulted in every pay negotiation that SAPA presents. We need something else. Please ALPA make a drive and let the current pilot group at Skywest vote. Enough is Enough.
Baby steps. First, you need to certify SAPA. Then if SAPA doesn't work, you can look for other alternatives but at least you have the rights afforded to you by the RLA.

100% agree. I personally might even vote for alpa (again) just to get representation. But I'd like to try in house if at all possible, alpa didn't work for regionals.

I thought the rule change which only counted actual no votes was overturned? No? If the new rule still stands we could probably pass a union as long as the apathetic crowd stayed home.

I think alpa works a lot better at the mainline level. I have an alpa card and voted yes last time (with serious reservations but yes nonetheless).

It was not overturned. It was ALMOST overturned by Congress, but instead the compromise let it stand with the caveat that it takes 50% worker's signatures instead of the previous 35% to get a union election.

It definitely can't hurt to go from what you have now to a certified SAPA union. And if it isn't working for you, you can always entertain alternatives that doesn't include ALPA.

To answer your question though, no, it hasn't been overturned.

We've had three union drives/votes since I've been here. The one back in 2000 was the only one that came close to passing. The other two, which included an in-house drive, failed miserably. I don't remember the years of those but it was probably 2006--2008.

I haven't even heard mention of another union drive in SLC in years.

SkyWest union votes history:
1994 (Teamsters) 141+38 yes votes. 421 eligible voters. 43%
1999 (Alpa) 378+11 yes votes. 789 voters. 49%
2004 (UPA in house) 412+66. 1,444 voters. 33%
2007 (Alpa) 904+7. 2,611 voters. 35%

Question #23 of the Sapa survey following the 2010 declined pay package:
"What do you think is the best representation option for SkyWest Pilots."

1- Sapa as currently organized - 197
2- In house union - 448
3- Alpa or other national union - 223

Union representation - 448+223.
Voters that did survey 868.
77.3% yes for union representation.

And that number has probably gotten higher in my opinion. Time for a drive.
So now with the new rules that the apathetic people who don't care to vote are not counted......now could be the time to change the status quo of "representation" by the junior varsity.

An in house regional union? that's like going to home depot to haul wood in a Smartcar....

Not sure what fairy land market forces Skywest operates in....

The company plays young pilots well.... Skywest management looks at ALPA regional and other regional union CBAs and tweaks their compensation... so, Skywest pilots already benefit from ALPA and unions...

You guys disrespect the profession....

How's that link on the company network? Still shoveling that anti-union garbage?
