While I agree reserve sucks, I don't think skywest reserve is that much worse than anywhere else. In fact, I KNOW it's a lot better than reserve at Mesa (cue Facebiter??). SAPA has done some good work in getting some improvements to our reserve rules lately.
Besides, people on reserve right now are breaking guarantee every month!

I think the challenge for us pilots is that the new reserve rules make it nearly impossible for us to look at the schedule and see if a trip is being b assigned in accordance with policy. We can see buckets, seniority, and call first, but not those other reserve criteria that take precedence over seniority and call first...

I thought reserve was awful at my previous regional. Skywest is worse. Proffering and choosing days off would at least make it better here. I lost sleep last, for some reason, thinking about commuting to reserve again as a captain. Makes me want to wait, but I could use the PIC time too.

I don't know if reserve at SkyWest is any better or worse than the other regionals but I do know it is absolutely miserable.
So bad that I know many leave SkyWest and get out of aviation completely.
I'm just trying to let prospective applicants know that you will not be treated with any type of courtesy or professionalism, and if you willing to sacrifice your self dignity you might make it through without contemplating suicide.
Some handle it better than others, but it truly is God awful. If you can find any other way to get your time, give it serious consideration.

Just when you think it can't get worse, they break out the TDY ugly stick. Enjoy every moment that it isn't sucking, because when it does, and it will, you need every bright moment to keep you from quitting. The reason it sucks is the wild extremes.

He spent a long time on reserve.
I talked to his sim partner the day it happened.

Anyone looking at comen to SkyWest doesn't have to worry about reserve right now. I had a "longer" reserve period of 2.5 months... And it was nowhere near as bad as so many if you make it... Tools. There are much worse jobs, and much worse regionals. We have a lot of great bases and fun crew members. Come over!

Come over, we will dress up in our pilot uniforms, get Kool Aid Slushies, go to the airport and talk to people, we can even take selfies in an ERJ, while the crew takes a sweet 4 hour break.

Time spent on reserve IS an issue if you plan to stick around to upgrade. Commute to reserve as a jr captain... for now long exactly? It is worthy of consideration.
I do want to put out that I think bidding for reserve days off is a BAD, BAD idea. This is one area where someone has some control of their destiny. PBS has been proven to award trips to lineholders out of seniority as it takes care of "coverage dates" and other nonsense. The top few bidding reserve will get what they want, and everyone else...shake up the magic 8 ball and it will determine your line. I say a vehement "NO" to anything that would give up the ability to bid a hard reserve line.. and I say that not having been on reserve for a while now.
Another facet to this is vacation/time off: Having hard reserve lines can help someone to actually get a solid week off, with 3-4 vacation/gold days. Think that will exist if you bid for days off using PBS? Poof.. gone.
