My reserve schedule is generally 4 on, 3 off for 3 weeks, then 5 on, 2 off, 2 on. You're guaranteed 11 days off per month. You bid for reserve lines and can swap RSV days with other pilots.

Long call RSV is a 12hr callout, and is considered call first. Short call is a 2 hr callout and can be 4a-4p or 9a-9p.

As for DEN it's junior on the CRJ...

Regarding reserve
- In a 31 day bid month reserve lines have 12 days off, 30 day month = 11 as kfahmi said
- Reserve lines are hard lines to bid for
- There is a formula that determines the ratio of long call to short call that they must build, as I recall it is something like 1 long call for every 4 short call lines
- Short call lines tend to be split evenly in the bid between AM & PM and that schedule applies for the whole month
- The number of reserve lines built is a function of how many pilots are in the domicile and how many anticipated lineholders there are. The difference is the number of reserve lines, so that will vary month to month with block hours and staffing levels in each domicile.

So are there months when there would be no reserve lines for a given domicile due to being over staffed? Or are reserve pilots required regardless of staffing?

Yes, it is rare but happens from time to time. In certain bases and times there have been times when there are no reserve lines, but the reason is the opposite of what you suggest: it is an indication of being understaffed. Any reserves would have to come from other bases in that case.

In any airline spares (reserve aircraft, parts, crews, etc) are necessary to have a reliable operation. They also cost money. The company may have a target for reserve coverage in any category but the reality is that things happen. People quit, training takes time, people go out on leave, airplanes break. It is a dynamic, non-perfect world.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know what the largest and smallest domociles are in terms of pilots ? I'm sure this changes monthly but am curious about DEN and COS. Mostly COS , which is what i would like to hold someday. How does being in a large domocile vs a small domocile change things? Or does it change much? Thanks

If you don't count the Brasilia bases which are shrinking rapidly the smallest base is Tucson with 17 crews. The largest base is SLC with 239 crews. there are over 300 captains in SLC due to the training department being there but only 239 FOs. COS has about 40 crews with the most junior FO being brand new.

Bigger domiciles have more trip variety. DEN has commutable trips, non commutable trips, and everything from locals to 4 days. COS being a maintenance base has less trip variety and fewer commutable trips. A lot of trips are early show late release and there aren't many locals.

Outstation bases will start early, finish late, hubs will start later and finish earlier. Between DEN and COS, DEN will give a slightly better QOL, and more variety due to the larger amount of crews. Outstations tend to be more senior as people relocate and stay, hubs have turnover.

Pretty senior, pretty junior for reserve, but one will not move up the list very fast. Think permanent reserve, or super junior line holder, for awhile.
