And amazingly it’s not our smallest RJ base.

So you're saying MSP is pretty likely to be held right out of the gate? Good news for me. Just need that pesky 600 hours in my logbook so I can apply...

Yes, MSP is the junior RJ base right now. However, if you need 600 hours just to meet the minimums, I'd say you're potentially an EMB candidate (not that there's anything wrong with that). So if you're offered an EMB position, I'd plan on FAT or PSP, with a possibility of transferring to SLC your first year, though rumors abound that the SLC EMB domicile is not long for this world. After a year, seniority permitting (which I think it would), you could transition to the RJ and hold MSP. But maybe you'll get lucky and be offered the RJ right off the bat. It's happened before. I'm all for having more people junior to me, so good luck!

Actually the Bro in PSP or LAX is why I want to go to Skywest. How long is contract with United for that flying? Is LAX attainable in a couple of months? I'm in OC so it's pretty much the same driving time between the two.

The junior LAX EMB FO has been at SkyWest just a touch over three months, so it's attainable. I don't know the specifics of the contract except that SkyWest will be a United partner for most of the decade, but I think the EMBs will be around for a couple years more. There just isn't anything to replace them with right now, and if the EMBs were parked United would have to abandon a lot of markets. Of course, some EMB cities could be served by Q400s, albeit with probably with less frequency. The Q400 rumor is pretty much dead at SkyWest right now, but having seen how United whimsically reallocates its regional equipment, it wouldn't surprise me to see some Colgan Qs on the west coast within the next few years. I think there's going to be a lot happening coming up, but your best bet for a west coast domicile is probably SkyWest, though those percentages seem to be changing.

So are lower time applicants usually offered the turboprop more so than the RJ? What sort of times would you guess to get an RJ off the bat? I am def not opposed to a BRO spot - just curious if I should hold off applying until my times are a bit higher?

Are you saying the minimums are 600 hours to get an interview? I thought they were 1000.

I think historically there has been a correlation between lower total time and being offered the EMB, but it's certainly not assured. I know of a few 1000hr CFIs that have been offered the RJ, and some higher time types who went into the EMB. In fact, we have a few furloughed United guys flying the EMB. It really depends on what they need, which classes they're running and how big they are.

In any case, I would try to get an interview and an offer as soon as you can. No sense in waiting to apply. I'd even be scoping out job fairs if you haven't already. Conventional wisdom would say take the first class offered, but I know that's not always practical. Some might say you're an arrogant spiky-haired punk if you want to hold out for the jet, but it might make sense if you're from MSP and have a family, for example. But if they offer you a choice and it's a six month wait for a jet class, that might be a lot of lost seniority. Hopefully the choice will be yours to make, but they might just stick you in FAT anyway!

Start going to job fairs now. The recruiters will talk you, then apply at 1000 And take what you can get. Don't wait to apply for the jet, the time it will take to make yourself a definitive jet candidate will take longer to get than a one year seat lock on the EMb
