From what I've heard from just about everyone in the training department from every regional the prior 121/135 pilots are actually more likely to fail. Fresh CFIs and people with no turbine time aren't sure what to expect and normally are more fresh out of college and have good study habits. They study hard and they know how to study. The middle aged pilots who have been at another 121 or 135 operator for the last 15 years and haven't been in college for the last 25 years are the ones who have forgotten their study habits and are more complacent about training.
With regards to age, that's true, I've observed after about age 40 on average it gets harder to learn new tricks and for pilots this applies to both book knowledge and the "hands on" skills. But an older career changer typically has better work ethic than the college kids, so they usually get by.
Even if noob CFI's were better in training, that's monkey skills which doesn't translate to experience and judgement online.

Heard recently that SkyWest is working on an Extended Over Water program for the 175's so they can be flown for Alaska, a 20 aircraft deal.

I've been keeping track just for my own curiosity. Since May 28th we have lost a total of 95 pilots. 51 CA and 44 FO's. Average seniority number for CA's is 22,000 and for FO's is 41,000
New Hire June two CRJ classes 48 and 6 ERJ, July one CRJ class 32 and 8 ERJ, August one CRJ class 27 and 7 ERJ, September one CRJ class 28 for a total of 156 new hires. I also show 131 upgrades since June including the October class for the CRJ. Some upgrades from CRJ to ERJ but most ERJ classes have been transition from CRJ CA.
Again since we don't get regular communication on these things, this is just numbers I have come up with looking at the seniority list and bid award lists. Less attrition in September than the last couple months.

Thanks for the numbers!

As for 20 aircraft, highly doubt that high of a number, more like 10. But you never know. SkyWest did purchase a second E175 sim to put in their Denver training facility. This most certainly means more 175 flying will be announced over the initial 40.

Didn't mean to sound like I was complaining. Simply saying that Systems is a boatload of information to assimilate. I know we'll all get through it just fine, but you have to admit it's a lot of stuff to get into your head in a very short time. Of course, I'm glad it isn't too easy, either!
