Kfahmi,
I left a lucrative engineering career to pursue my dream. Others have certainly had better luck in their a aviation careers than myself, but I still love it and am don't regret leaving my office job over 7 years ago.
You have a great attitude, and I look forward to seeing you out on the line. If you're in SLC this month, let me know and we'll grab a Lofte's beer.

Flying Part 121 has been my dream since I was 4 years old. I was all slated for a USAF Academy slot, but then they told me I couldn't fly since I didn't have 20/20 uncorrected. (This was before laser surgery.) After college I looked at doing the freight dog route, but this was in '94 when absolutely nobody was hiring for anything.
So I gave up hopes of an airline job. Went into the corporate (non-aviation) world, where I've been for the past 20 years. Earned all my ratings on the side, did some Part 91 corp flying, helped found a Pt 61/141 flight school and grow it from 4 to 26 aircraft. Bought my own aircraft, which I fly all the time. Logged north of 5,000 hours, including about 3,500 hours instructing.
Finally decided it was time to go follow my dreams. Having a very understanding wife (who is a private pilot) made the decision much easier.

Funny how the only guys bashing the new guy on the SkyWest thread don't work at SkyWest. Yeah I get you get treated like immigrants at other regionals, especially when you vote in concessions. But not all regionals are as horrible as yours. Move along.

Don't listen to the negative Nancys. If it's your dream, do it! Not sure how he'd be burning a bridge by quitting a job. Google or some other tech job will always be there and it's not like he's giving up his seniority there either. Welcome to SKW, and I'm sure you'll be able to get a west coast base soon if not right away.

I never burn bridges. In fact I'm still doing freelance work here and there for a company I left seven years ago.
That West Coast base was a big attractor for me to SKW, and then when I went to SLC and met the people there, I was sold. If I can get the SFO base eventually (30 minute drive from my house), I am very optimistic about that fitting with the rest of my life very well.
Lookin' forward to it!!
