That may well be a question I ask myself in the coming months Seriously though, I understand how from the outside, a decision like mine makes no sense at all. But it's been something I've been wanting to do for many years...leave the corporate (non-aviation) world and go fulfill my childhood dream of flying for the airlines. I'm sure when I'm commuting to reserve in ORD in December and sitting in the Discount Inn for days on end, and making less than Google's janitors do per hour, I'll wonder if I've lost my mind. But this is something I just have to do. I can't explain it any better than this: I refuse to spend the rest of my life regretting that I didn't give my childhood dream a chance at success.

And really, most of us who are experienced pilots have the intelligence and interpersonal skills to go do something that pays much better. Nearly all of us have college degrees, and if you can fly a multi-turbine aircraft in weather safely and professionally, you will have no trouble making 5 times as much by becoming a marketing manager (or what have you) in some Fortune 500 company. So it's not like I'm the only guy to go for a career change. But it's not just about pay. The two jobs that I've hated the most (not Google, it's awesome here) are the ones that I took purely for the money.

At a certain point in your life you just realize that you have to go and do what makes you happy, rather than conform to what other people might think would be the best thing for you.

I went though last couple of pages and I didn't see any "epic burn", so I was wondering what part of that conversation got him riled up.

So I gave up hopes of an airline job. Went into the corporate (non-aviation) world, where I've been for the past 20 years. Earned all my ratings on the side, did some Part 91 corp flying, helped found a Pt 61/141 flight school and grow it from 4 to 26 aircraft. Bought my own aircraft, which I fly all the time. Logged north of 5,000 hours, including about 3,500 hours instructing.

Finally decided it was time to go follow my dreams. Having a very understanding wife (who is a private pilot) made the decision much easier.
Your story is very similar to mine, just that my flying resume isn't as impressive as yours, I just have ATP mins...

Not many people can understand or even comprehend why you chose to make that jump....

They will never understand that when your office overlooks the SF bay, where you can see the final approach for SFO, you can see those guys making approaches every minute, how miserable it makes you feel deep inside everyday....

Congrats on the job & Best of luck in training.....

This is a ridiculous thing to write an a message board full of pilots. You don't think the vast majority of people on here don't love to fly and made huge sacrifices to fly? "Not many people" on here dreamed of flying as a kid and someday being a professional pilot? Most people here not only understand your position but also fully comprehend why you do what you do to become a pilot. People write what they write because they have already been down the road you are just starting, they are just telling you something you don't want to hear or believe -- most people are not going to find what they are looking for at the end of the road.

Wow dude, maybe you should stick to Endeavor threads and quit raining on new hire parades. To Kfahmi congrats on getting hired. A lot of guys I used to fly with at SkyWest came from "Greener pastures." I can't remember any of them regretting it. Theres a never ending stream of guys on this board that supposedly hate this job, but continue showing up for work year after year. It's not like that on the line, have fun.

Thank you sir (or mademoiselle, or ma'am, as applicable)

It'll be an adventure, that's for sure. I'm very much looking forward to it.

When you're downwind for 28C pointing right at the Chicago Skyline and turn base over the high rises you'll never regret your decision to leave.
