I hope I never have to fly with either of you. The worst captains out there are the ones who don't respect their FOs or who have forgotten what it's like to be an FO. If you think we don't work hard and you do all of the work then you've clearly forgotten what it's like to be an FO. Obviously you have extra responsibility. That's why you're paid $40/hour more than me. If you want to complain about that responsibility then downgrade back to FO and take your $40 paycut.
If you have a problem with one of your FOs playing with their phone when they're supposed to be doing something, or taking too long to do the walk around talk to them. Maybe they don't know that it offends you. Maybe they're just a little tired and slowing down. Either way communicating to your FO that it's bothering you is probably all that needs to happen to make it stop. You both sound like you'd rather play god captain than actually communicate and be a good crew member.

That is not the implication behind my posts at all. I ought to know how hard FO's work, I did it for more than 6 years. My point was rather that it is an oversimplification to say that the captain is paid more by luck of seniority rather than for weight of responsibilities. And that I fly with a lot of FO's who have adopted the attitude that since they aren't paid as much as they think they should be that they are going to do the bare minimum they can get away with. That is all.

Awwwww, poor baby! You just don't get it, most likely never will, oh well. "Little tired and slowing down", priceless, would you like me to hold tour latte while you sip slowly? Life is so tough, better call your mom, maybe she will make you a ribbon or 2 for completing a 4 day without wetting yourself, just speed dial from the basement, she is upstairs cooking your dinner while you surf internet porn.....

Are you actually a captain or just a troll? You're telling me that you've never started getting fatigued on a trip because of your staggering awesomeness compared to mine? If you have a problem with your FOs and you have that bitter of an attitude about it you need to communicate it to them. That's the only way you have any prayer of not having a toxic flight deck.
Everyone makes mistakes....even captains.

I've been at Skywest for 3.5 yrs now, and am pretty happy. But I live a full life outside work, have no debt, and live well within my means (but still have a lot of nice toys and have fun!). It really is a personal choice to be miserable, and I say this with experience - I used to be one miserable SOB in my previous career.

Honestly, I can see where some of these captains are coming from. I feel like when I come in to do my job, I put forth regular effort. I don't screw around with my phone when there's work to be done, I've looked at the weather, I review the release and NOTAMS, I look through the can, and I have the attitude that whoever gets to the FMS first is the one to set it up. If that ends up being me for every leg, that's fine. Considering how much less work the CRJ is compared to the Bro, I'm usually glad to have the extra work to keep from being bored anyway.
So like I said, I feel this is really just basic stuff. But I'm often thanked by captains I fly with for doing such a good job and having a good attitude. I always really appreciate that, but it often leaves me wondering what the heck some of the other FOs are doing, when I feel like my basic efforts are met with praise? But then again, I'd say half the time I come out to a new airplane with crap everywhere, seat/seatbelts not re-adjusted, and a new page flipped over in the can for the AM crew, etc. So I have no doubt there are some real lumps in the right seat, and it goes without saying that they are likely entitled as well.

Now that this spiraled out of control... The only thing I'll comment on is the post about not doing the walk around because we're not fueled. 9/10 times I'll wait, it takes longer to make two trips and most likely have to fight a swarm of people boarding or tons of bags in the jet bridge. My time is better utilized doing other work to get the next flight out.
