Skywest

Biggest douche post of the forum! I really hope you don't view your FO's this way because they do a lot to get the flight done! The only thing that's different are the responsibilities in each role! Have some respect for your fellow crew members and it wouldn't hurt to put yourself in there shoes from time to time! Maybe you've been sitting left seat a little too long already to remember!
I don't work for Skywest though so at least at my airline when the captain is occupied with paper work or doesn't show up until 10 minutes before departure time We share the work load, i.e talking to ops or the FA or maintenance. Maybe Skywest teaches their FO's to just sit and watch the captain?....

Are you your biggest fan? Do you go around telling people how important you are? I know plenty of Captains who don't know they are flying into weather until it shows up on MY MFD...not theirs because they are busy not caring. Maybe the FO is sitting there on FB because you are so busy thinking to yourself how awesome you are that you neglect to even try to include him in the decision making or perform even the slightest hint of mentoring.

Actually, we are. And we expect it from everyone. Being aggravated because you expect your FO (or Captain, to be fair, because it does work both ways and there are some turds in both lists) to pull their own weight and live up to their responsibilities does not make one a "douche". I work with many excellent and dedicated people. I do, however, find that the FO's who whine the loudest about "deserving" a captain seat after their X number of years are frequently the people who are the laziest and least engaged and most uninterested in learning something because they do believe they already know everything, and I often wonder what kind of captains they become when their numbers do come up. The checkride was far and away the easiest part of the transition to the left seat.

Now I'll be elbow deep in paperwork with the phone glued to my ear talking to someone in a 435 area-code and trying to simultaneously deal with ramp/ops/agent/flight attendant... and then I look to my right and see the meat bag occupying the seat next to me playing candy crush or surfing Facebook instead of doing the walk-around because "we aren't done fueling yet".
No I am pretty sure you got the biggest douche award for this post. The captain is busy with paper work or shows 10 prior is because he is insuring all MELs are correct, and/or that the A/C isn't going to PHX with a deferred APU or DEN where it may arrive but can't leave because bleeds closed will be required, and a 200 with no APU on a 90f day in DEN is a health and safety hazard. But you don't see that, so it never happened/s. The captain is paid more because he is responsible for not just his job but yours too, and insuring that you do your walk around instead of finger banging your phone is dirty, nasty work.
If you have a problem with one of your FOs playing with their phone when they're supposed to be doing something, or taking too long to do the walk around talk to them. Maybe they don't know that it offends you. Maybe they're just a little tired and slowing down. Either way communicating to your FO that it's bothering you is probably all that needs to happen to make it stop. You both sound like you'd rather play god captain than actually communicate and be a good crew member.

Where I work the first officer is also responsible for checking the AML and signing the release stating such. It is to back up the captain! Do you not think that we check the weather and notams? Do you not think we know what may be broken and differed? Either you have been working with the laziest guys ever or have had a few of them and thereby lumping all of us into that category!

Oddly, the checkride is the the basic minimum performance standard to operate in the front of a 121 aircraft. You never see the captain sitting in his home/room watching the weather the night before, and then again at 0400 for that 0430 van ride. Or wonder what is going through his head before the 3rd of 4 legs for the day, while you text and surf FB. You think we don't notice, but the reality of 10k hrs of 121 experience means I know when you are gonna go pee before you do, by the little squirm you do before announcing that the vanilla latee and quart of water you drank in the first 45 minutes of the flight needs to be offloaded. So while you think the same checkride means that you are equal, think again, co-captain!

I hope I never have to fly with either of you. The worst captains out there are the ones who don't respect their FOs or who have forgotten what it's like to be an FO. If you think we don't work hard and you do all of the work then you've clearly forgotten what it's like to be an FO. Obviously you have extra responsibility. That's why you're paid $40/hour more than me. If you want to complain about that responsibility then downgrade back to FO and take your $40 paycut.
