That's a good point. I already had a friend read through this thread and tell me he was now intimidated by the interview. It's nothing like that... As long you you study and aren't a jackass, the interview is very reasonable and everybody is very nice and wants you to do well. Recently there was even a rumor that they want people to draw an entire jet engine, with every detail. It is absolutely not true... But the may want you to know the difference between a fan and compressor!
You are 110% correct that the OO folks running the interview were super-friendly and did their best to put everyone at ease. It was a great environment and made me think, "Yeah, I really want to work here." No question about it. It was by far the most relaxed test-type situation I've ever been in. But that doesn't mean to say I could've showed up without doing any prep, I think that would have been a very poor idea. The OO guys want you to succeed but they also want to ensure you know your stuff.
As for the turbine engine drawing, they did ask us to draw a turbine engine. I drew a specific engine (Honeywell AS907, which is used by the jet I'm SIC-typed in)... I drew the following.
N1 fan
4 centrifugal-flow N2 compressors with stator vanes
1 axial-flow N2 compressor w/ diffuser
P2, P3 bleed-air pickups
Bypass air route
Combustion chamber with 2 igniters & 16 fuel nozzles
2 N2 turbine discs
3 N1 turbine discs
N1 and N2 shafts
ITT and EGT probes
Thrust reversers
Accessories incl. starter, fuel pump, oil pump, generator, hydraulic pump
So I don't know if you'd call that super-detailed, but it was straight out of FlightSafety's book on the CL30...and the interviewer seemed impressed.
I didn't look at any other guys' drawings, naturally, but somehow I'm guessing they want you to draw more than a single-spool 1947-era turbojet with 1 compressor and 1 turbine disc...but what do I know?

I used to design turbine engines for a living, and I gave them less detail than you did. They really are just looking for the basics on that question.

Just got the good news from OO. Looks like I will be joining you guys for a September class (other commitments prevent me from attending earlier.)
Lookin' forward to it
