People without connections are worried about upgrade time because the next best thing is to become a check airman. I'm unfortunately the first person in my extended family/friend network to ever go to the airlines. I know a bunch of regional captains from flight school but I have zero connections at any major. A quick upgrade and trying to become a check airman is my best shot.

I'm sure there are a lot of people in the same boat as me.

Agreed. Not all connections are inherited. Most can be obtained by doing a little extra ie, go out of your way to talk with Jumpseaters, Flight Attendandts, Customer service ect... You don't know who they're related to, married to or connections they may have that can help you out; or at the very least, you build another bridge in this crazy industry.

Your best shot doesn't hindge on fast upgrade or becoming a check airman. Your best shot is based soley on the effort put forth. Have you gone to job fairs? Have you talked to every jumpseater or crew you jumpseat with? Have you taken the time to talk with FAs, customer service? Have you expressed you desire for a certain airline to your chief pilot? He/she may be able to put you in touch with someone. What have you done to make yourself more marketable? Community service? Young Eagles? Advanced degree?

Bottom line, dont focus on things you have no control over like upgrade time and whether or not you'll become a check airman. Focus on the things that you have control over.

I've been on the Brasilia! I've only had one jumpseater in my airline career so far and that was the FAA. On the RJ I'll try to use that route to network for sure.

Not to mention, you should focus on being a good First Officer while you are one, not just waiting out your time until you move to the left seat. Being a poor flying partner can hinder you when it comes to making the move to a major. There are guys I've flown with whom I wouldn't write a letter of recommendation for if I was being held at gunpoint... Ironically they're usually the guys who are whining about how they're still stuck as FO's.

I have at least 5 years until I upgrade. Being a good FO and trying to network are about all I can do at this point. Even if everything shut down and I became a 10 year FO there's really no sense in whining about it. I'd be enjoying my sweet 10 year FO schedule and taking lots of time off because the second I upgrade I'm back to commuting to reserve.

As an FO I actually wish more captains would give an honest opinion about how I am to fly with, even if they wait until the end of the trip to do it. If there's some specific bad habit I have that annoys people it's hard to figure that out on my own. I'm sure there are a lot of people out there who are just delusional about how they're viewed by others. I know there are a lot of captains and FOs who are too nice to speak up too.

Junior Brasilia Captain just went to 6.5 years. RJ over 7. But none of that matters to someone getting hired now for a number of reasons. Age 65 delaying attrition, lack of hiring for a while, aircraft deliveries...

Most of our limited attrition has been on the FO side as well. 2/3rds of the pilots leaving over the last several years have been FOs.

Junior captain is a mid 2100 number out of 3200. 1100 or so pilots from the bottom. If (and a big IF) we stay the same size as a pilot group, a new hire would need to move up a 1000+ numbers to upgrade. Over the last several years our average attrition has been about a dozen a month. Going forward that should increase significantly. If it goes to 30-40 a month upgrades should happen a lot quicker.

Does anybody based in SFO have any info on a cheap crashpad? I'll be on reserve down there. Thanks!

If I get awarded a RJ new-hire slot and can pick between DEN and COS - when I would live almost in between the two, which would a SKW pilot recommend? Maybe pros and cons of each if possible...? I appreciate any helpful info.
