The other train of thought is that if there's a lot of movement you might be able to get PHX a lot faster if you start on the CRJ as opposed to dealing with a 1 year seatlock on the Brasilia. Also they award transfers before transitions so if you were MSP based on the CRJ you would get a PHX transfer award potentially before a senior Brasilia pilot. The problem with doing it that way is that if the music suddenly stops you'll be stuck commuting to reserve for years. If you take the brasilia and everything shuts down at least you'll be commuting to a good line.

I agree with you, to an extent...
But sometimes it is not only abt the SJS, it's about planning your life. No one can stay on the EMB forever, we all will need to move on to the jet for better pay in year # 2 and beyond. That's why it is imp to know how long will it take to get SFO, is it something attainable after the 1 yr seat lock is up, or once my seat lock is up, I will have to make a choice of either commute to another base or take less pay & stay on the Emb.
People say that it better to avoid the commute as much as possible.
Oh BTW, are the jets in SFO really shiny......

I actually could have made more money 2nd year on the EMB than on the CRJ. When I transitioned I was bidding 25% in base on the brasilia holding just about as much credit as I felt like working. I went straight to reserve on the RJ with a 75 hour guarantee. A 95 hour line on the brasilia with 300 hours per diem on 2nd year pay is quite a bit more than reserve guarantee on the RJ with ~100 hours per diem.
If you live in SFO and choose to start out on the RJ you're going to waste at least a year of your life commuting to reserve. Then you'll get the transfer to SFO and still be on reserve making less money than the Brasilia pilot who is junior to you that parks next to you in the parking lot.
I'm not sure what the reasoning is but there are a TON of people who seem to not understand that. I loved the Brasilia and loved not being on reserve. The only reason I transitioned was because I live in an RJ only base.
