15 years reserve? Wow. 15 years? What a story that must be.

It was an exaggeration but not by much. There are 224 guaranteed lines in SLC this month. CA #225 has an employee number in the high 14,000s. That's somewhere around 10 years seniority and still on reserve or a composite line.

Sorry if this is a bit off topic, but here goes:
So I'm curious...how's the schedule at Skywest for someone who lives in base? What is the length of most trips (how many days)? Are there a lot of day trips? How much flexibility do you have in your scheduling (i.e. how hard is it to drop trips on days you don't want to fly and pick up trips on your days off)? How long does one generally stay on reserve? How is the schedule for a typical reserve guy (again how easy or hard is it to drop/pick up reserve days)?
I know these are a lot of questions, but I'm trying to get a good feel for what the QOL is like in regards to the typical pilot's schedule.
Thanks!

Another good thing about living in base, is if you are only stuck with 4 days, you can easily break those up. Other people will be looking for the same thing so they'll offer to take part of your trip for you so you can be home more. Then its pretty easy to pick up other locals or 2 days from open time or from other crew members. You can pick up trips from any domicile as well, as long as you are willing to commute to that domicile on your own.
Reserve is reserve. You choose from several preset reserve lines each month. It's one thing I don't like about reserve here. The days are set and you can't choose your reserve days like I could at my old airline. We have AM, PM and Long Call reserve, which is 12 hours.

From a QOL perspective you would probably be better off commuting to a jet base than downshifting to the Bro after one year. Better trips and more money...even if you had to buy tickets to get to work on occasion.
But if you're after a fast upgrade, it might make sense to stay on the bro as an FO...a lot easier to upgrade if you've flown it before.

As one of those SLC reserve Captain guys (8 years), It can be good or bad.. Good month, ski most reserve days.. (So far this month only worked 3 days).....They seem short out in MSP so we get sent out that way for 4 days to sit in a hotel on reserve... But the sked question is realy to hard to answer.. Last month did a 5day MSP sit (did'nt fly) 2 two day trips and 3 locals on reserve the rest just sat at home and stared at the dog....

Anyone hear any word on growth at LAX for the Skywest/AA side? I've a few friends at AA that heard rumors of growth in non Eagle regional flying out of LAX coming up!

Last I heard we canceled an EMB class or two because we haven't had as much attrition as anticipated from the Bro to the jet, but hiring should continue presumably for the RJ. The company site still shows the FO position as open fwiw.
