There is NO industry in the world where managers intentionally sabotage their own scheduling to honor seniority. Sorry.

(Unless not allowed by a legally enforceable union negotiated contract. But these airlines don't typically get short staffed in the first place).

The math is very simply. MDG is 4.2. The max FDP in a months are 20. So the maximum hours you can cover with poor trips is 84. If the goal is to reach 90 you have to trade off some trips and award higher credit trips to junior people.
I don't get it? Whose goal is to reach 90? You'll time out. The average line is better than MDG.
Variables like monthly block hours/airframes/pilots all shouldn't be a valid excuse for seniority deviation. Seniority is really all we have.

There may be people who want to work more, but you can only block 83 hours per month without meeting the 1000 limit in 12 months. When you package average is 88-89 hours (PBS Bid info page on SWOL) that is about what you can count on. AOS documentation says it should award junior people more credit, but that is not what is happening. If your line could've given you all your trips but your line was only 82 hours, it will drop your awarded trips and replace them with higher paying trips from lower layers, or drop off L7 and assign you whatever it wants. My line should've finished at 87 hours with my first 4 layers of trips. Needed 88.something so it dropped my 2 day trip and gave me 5 min credit locals to end up with 94 hours of credit. Yes being short about 20 minutes caused me to work 3 more days and 4 more trips to the airport from what my seniority should have been able to hold.

Without proper staffing, PBS will fail at any seniority level. You are right in that seniority is all we have. And it's what keeps us here getting punished month after month.

90 hours isn't my goal. But that's what PBS assigns because staffing is low... and btw, it is 90 hours credit - not block. Throw in a bunch of SDO and you can do 90 hours all year long.

Of course, the average line has to be at least 90/20 = 4.5. And it is probably a bit better. And that is exactly the point. PBS needs to mix MDG trips with higher paying trips once it reaches the bottom of the seniority list. And the higher value trips will most likely come from more senior guys.

The only options out of that dilemma are increase staffing or abandon the global optimization - and thay are effectively the same. A seniority only driven bid would probably required 10-15% more pilots in each domicile.

And this is the answer... Management and SAPA should be working towards this solution. Costs would be slightly higher however QOL would improve and this retention to a certain degree. Better retention more savings.

Quick question for a stupid newbie like myself, on my line award it shows R7D and R9D in the expanded pairing detail. I take it this means the trip is on the 700/900 delta side? What happens if I'm checked out on the 7 but I haven't flown any trips on the 9?

They will pair you with a Check Airman... For 2+ legs in the 900. That trip or one before...

I didn't think they did 900 checkouts for FO's. I never got one.
