The gate agents can force a deadheading SkyWest pilot to sit in the jump seat on a SkyWest operated flight only. I haven't had it happen to me in about 10 years, but it's possible. Most of the time it isn't an issue though. Most pilots will do it if it means getting another person on the flight.

Exactly right FB. As long as you're not bumping a pilot out of the JS, I'll take it on a case by case basis. For instance, my wife was stuck in Ohare and getting bumped from every flight (over booked United). She was to the point of tears, and I felt helpless; although, i fully realize the nature of standby. Thank goodness another pilot had sympathy and took the Jumpseat, so my wife could get the last seat in the back. For that reason, I'll always try and pay it forward.

Pilots vote on pay and on reps from their region. The 19 reps are supposed to vote based on what their region wants. The only problem is there is never any communication about what is being voted on so we can contact our reps to voice our opinion. SAPA is way to quick with "gives" to the company to help align the policy with what the company is doing. Usually to the detriment of the pilots.
But anything the pilots want, even if it is mutually beneficial, is pushed aside or we are told there is no time or resources. (Virtual domiciles, reserve proffering, trip stacking)

Why wouldn't the reps want their constituents to know the by-law changes they are voting on? The only way they know how the pilots feel about that is if they know ahead of time the proposed changes.

Just curious, what is your pilot group's stance on a deadheading crewmember taking the jumpseat? I witnessed this twice in the last week, both were SKW employees. One was on a flight I was working out of LAX, which the captain shot down immediately. The other instance, a Skywest operated flight, bumped a commuting pilot off the jumpseat on the last flight of the day, leaving the individual stranded for the night. I realize there is no union there to provide direction on the issue, but is the pilot group really cool with that?
This is a big no-no at ALPA carriers, and can put your company's JS agreement in jeopardy. Especially when a commuting pilot gets bumped by someone who should be a ticketed passenger in the back.

Your captains lose authority on their own JS?
I saw this happen once where there was no commuters trying to get on so the DH took the JS. Then a commuter showed and bumped the JS since he was he took priority. DH trying to take the JS got screwed because the gate agent wouldn't unseat the revenue passenger that got his seat.

The gate agents will ask the captains if they can take a jump seater first. It's up to the captain to go up to the gate and figure out what's going on beyond that.

I commute on SKW 90% of the time, and I've been left at the gate three times over the past year when I should have gotten on. Some of your CAs need to grow a pair instead of letting the gate agents walk all over them. There's no excuse for that garbage!

Well that's all on him then. In this case the offline commuter, who showed up early and listed first, was bumped by the company DH. And that commuting pilot was myself. That's one more night I couldn't get home to my wife and had to drop some coin on a hotel because someone was afraid to say no to the gate agent.

I'm saying that even if you don't see any commuters, one may show up at the last minute and bump you off the JS.
