I got the eBag because everyone else had one so I thought it had to be fine. It is fine, but I'd like better if it was bigger. I'm getting a bigger bag next time.

The FAA A/C for approving the ops specs on an efb program requires a validation period (ive seen 6 months in the two programs I've been involved in) with a test group and dual carry period. Probably not getting turned on in a month or two...

They have been in the validation phase for almost a year now. There will be no period here where we have the ship sets and efb's. Once the efb is active the jepps are gone.

This might be a stupid question, but... I start ground soon and was wondering if I should bring some sort of bag or briefcase to carry study materials. Do most guys have a backpack, messenger bag or something similar to carry books, or will I be ok without one?

A backpack would work out well. There are one or two heavy-ish binders to lug around, plus your own notebook/laptop for note taking.

Are they still doing double occupancy or do you get your own room?
