Have to say that flying the bro was the best experience builder for me coming from flight instructing. I thought I understood flying down to mins, but after flying in/out of MRY, ACV, CEC for the coastal fog, Central California and Oregon fog in SMF, FAT, MFR, LMT, and the crazy weather in IYK (never got to really do any SLC flying)... For me I had no idea what it was really like and it made me a better pilot flying in this stuff 6-8 times a day on a 4 day trip because of it.
It was fun with the crews and we all kinda created that bond for 3 years being on the BRO... Its kinda a love hate thing, most of us all loved flying it, but don't miss it (from the pay, long hours, leaking DV windows, SFO flow, etc). Just some of the highlights of flying on the bro at least out of FAT
- CIC (S&S Market Tri Tip BBQ) and the Sierra Vista Brewery
- Awesome hotels in CLD, SBP, MRY
- Seeing how "Alive" the fog is in ACV
- Stories of the "carriage inn" and the van driver Tommy in IYK
- MFR (Kaleidoscope Pizza)
- MOD and the "NINJA" vs MOD police in front of the hotel
- Seeing people actually kiss the oil and gas soaked pavement as they get off the IYK and PSP flights to LAX.
- Im sure there are more but can't really think of more being its late......
Besides TAKE THE FIRST CLASS THEY OFFER YOU REGARDLESS IF ITS THE BRO OR RJ.... SENIORITY IS THE KEY...

Well said BHopper... I came here with quite a bit more experience than a CFI, with years of previous charter and corporate flying (as well as previously instructing). That said, I learned a TON on the Bro and am very glad I flew it first. The flying into places like CEC and ACV was definitely eye opening, as I had never seen places with such dynamic and unpredictable weather before. Flying the West coast Bro was overall an awesome and very enjoyable experience, and makes even the worst CRJ trip seem like a piece of cake!
Given the chance to upgrade to FAT Bro CA someday, I wouldn't hesitate a minute.

Ya right now I'm a CFI in CLD so I have experience with the marine layer but I'm sure it gets worse than Carlsbad. I am most definitely going to take the first class offered but as soon as I hit 1200 I have an offer to do 135 charters in Senecas so I might do that instead of instructing to get to 1500.

I love flying the Bro. I would stay on it if it weren't for the domiciles. Right now I'm commuting from Chicago to FAT. That gets really tiring. The junior CRJ domiciles are a lot more appealing to me.
Kaleidoscope Pizza in MFR, Sierra Nevada brewery and the Indian Restaurant in Chico are awesome on the overnights. It's fun hanging out on the beach or on the golf course in MRY too. I probably won't be able to walk to too many beaches if I start doing CRJ trips out of ORD.

Don't show up for EMB IOE without some tailwheel time. If you're looking for some hours, get a tailwheel endorsement, it does help.

Right out of CFI I did about 20 hours of aerobatic training in decathlons, citabrias, and one glorious hour in an extra so I've got a little tail wheel time.
