Jackson Hole is probably a Special Airport that requires a checkout and sign off by a Check Airman before a Captain can land there. Maybe the Captain was new and was on a reserve call out. After getting airborne, he realized that he didn't have the formal approval to land there. It's just a guess on my part.

Given the weather, this would be my guess too....
But according to the article's author, "a scheduling error seems unlikely" so this cannot be the simple answer 🙄

Checked the FAA Special Pilot-In-Command Qualification Airports list and Jackson Hole is on there. Wonder how nobody in Utah realized they were sending a CA who wasn’t signed off for that airport or that the system didn’t lock out the flight to alert people to the issue.

probably something as simple as a 22 year old high school dropout who now works in HDQ and doesn't really comprehend what they are doing just clicks "enter" and sends the young inexperienced CA into an area he wasn't qualified. Don't worry. No one at hdq will take the hit.

Maybe dispatch realized it and messaged him halfway through the flight?

Or maybe the Capt finally realized it while enroute reviewing the company pages for the destination...

You posted the TAF. What was the METAR?

JAC is a special airport qualification. I'm not sure what the OO requirements are for PIC for this airport.

I remember doing my JAC qualification as a new CA at OO. You just need to go there with an LCA and do a supervised entry...

My guess junior CA on SFO reserve, maybe hot reserve, gets short notice call out and didn't get to review the docs until cruise flight. Actually sounds like they got all the way to JAC, so he probably figured it out while setting up for the arrival. Better late than never I guess.

If JAC flights aren't normally crewed out of SFO, they might be hit and miss for getting those guys qualed up and it might not be something they normally even think about?

Did OO ever try to send me somewhere that the crew or plane wasn't right for? Yup. Did DX catch it? Nope.
