I disagree, I think it’s a terrible idea. What’s next work for free? Intern F/O the first year? Why not because the only thing that matters is a number and 121 turbine right?
This is nothing new, it’s the old pay-for-training scheme, albeit they forgive the amount if you stay 5 years and or give the PIC.

No, I'm not a general in the SGU Air Force. Sun Country Lacky I am.
I guess I don't see it as pay for training. I get it. I do. This thing sucks. But in that five years you're collecting, what, $600? $700,000? At least until the pay scales drop. Which they will. I see AA stopped hiring now. Agree, yes, medical out or wash out SHOULD NOT require payment of the $80.. 100% agree. Or even just a quit to leave the industry entirely. People do that. I remember a few during Covid. Oops.
In my situation- I would have paid the 80 to leave for my ULCC/Amazon Cargo when I bolted OO over two years ago. Why? I sit better then 50% company seniority now and make awesome money. I was contemplating United, they've not called, so I'll keep doing this and don't care if they call or not. Which I would never have said as an OO pilot. And not because of the people.... SERIOUSLY, THE BEST CREWS EVER. I had so much fun at OO. But the 16% direct contribution here is pretty nice. And no attendance policy is almost as equally significant. These people simply don't jerk your chain. Point is, none of any of this happens if I don't get in the door at SkyWest and get going.
As far as the OO training? If it is pay for training? I think Sunny would hire only OO pilots if they had a choice. They love the product.
Good luck to all you guys. Like I said, it's a great job in a shi** industry. This agreement is the shi*** industry part.

I see your angle, crappy industry for sure. Sadly this solution will be unnecesary as the situation has already remedied itself via hiring slowdown (or stopped) everywhere, sorry for those who missed the big wave but that's life.
Glad to hear Sunny is working good for you, I have several friends there and have bought tickets myself several times since they're flying back into my hometown, always treated good and got to where I wanted to be. Sunny's culture reminds me of the old SKYW of years ago. I hope they have a bright future.

The hiring everywhere will increase as soon as aircraft with Boeing is worked out. People shouldnt panic. The pilot shortage still exists and will exist for a very long time. Regionals like Skywest are counting on young low time inexperienced CFI for the most part to staff their aircraft in hopes they will stick around for 5 years by signing that agreement. If the industry slowing was not temporary, Skywest would not be iniitating a contract to force them to stay. Anyone who agrees with the contract is most likely on here to sway pilots to sign by instilling panic and dread.

regardless of industry trends. The contract is here to stay. Why not have one and protect your business.. out of the pool of 6000 CFI’s. They can get the 2000 they need to sign it… they only need 1/3 of the interviews to sign it over the next year. To stabilize. The business plan.. the ones that don’t go into the deep end of the pool to wait.

FAA numbers for 2022. Actually 8,000. Sorry.. So thats 8000 people that have had 2 years as a CFI and around regional mins, looking for jobs… 2000 pilots is needed to get up to targeted numbers. But now that attrition is well very low. Maybe hiring will slow off down…

Which airline do you currently fly for? I am 135 cargo captain with an ATP and ~2,000 hours. I have a CJO with OO currently. I have not signed the contract. From what I am seeing, most airlines don't care much about my 135 time, despite being a type-rated, multi-turbine aircraft.
