Default Bidding at Skywest

Hi again,

As for bidding at Skywest, thinking monthly rostering, do they run PBS or Linebidding?

Does anybody here have anything to say about it, either way?

Thx.

PBS.

I've been here long enough to use both types. I prefer PBS. It does have its drawbacks though. You really need to spend some time to understand how it works.

PBS is great if you’re senior. Not if you’re junior; like anything else that goes along with being junior.

At SkyWest, PBS was great if you were junior and great if you were senior, but if you were mid pack, you got screwed. But skywest PBS is forced to "solve" to cover all trips and reserve days whereas PBS at a place like DL is not and will leave some trips in OT after the run.

It’s PBS, but I’d be surprised if there were a regional that still does line bidding, unless you count Southwest. (Relax, it’s just a joke). PBS is pretty much the way it’s done now, for better or worse. OO’s PBS system isn’t the most intuitive and there’s no training on it, but if you take the time to read about it and figure it out, it’s more or less functional. I wouldn’t come to or avoid OO primarily based on PBS.

Bidding at OO is super simple. You bid for what you want - and then you don't get it.

well, you need to read the book of “ The Twelve Great Myths of PBS”. By Terry Cox. Because the instructions in pbs are not well explained, the book goes in details about how to bid correctly.

How does this seniority chart on their website work?

https://www.skywest.com/skywest-airl...athway-program

Does this mean the date provided next to the base signals how long it *could* take to bid into that base?

For example, with the current chart it will take longer to bid into IAH than it would DEN?

Scroll down, click "seniority", choose the aircraft you want displayed. What it shows is the date-of-hire of the most junior person that currently holds that base. Comparing when the most junior person in each base was hired indicates to you how junior/senior those bases are.

If it's still not making sense, lets use an example: The chart shows the most junior FO on the ERJ in BOI was hired 4/10/23. Compare that to SAN, where the most junior FO there was hired 11/21/22. That implies that it will take much much longer to get to SAN than BOI. Essentially, BOI took a month (current date is 5/14/23) to hold, whereas SAN is taking 6 months.
