I'm starting to think that the only reliable path to a financially comfortable life as a 121 pilot is to become independently wealthy in another career field, sell your company, and then 'retire' to a 121 gig.

Well...they're getting paid 10 hours/month I believe. So $500. It's not nothing, and they're accruing longevity so that's a little something too I guess, but it's not like the rest of us on CPTO getting 50 hours a month either. You aren't going to survive on $500 a month though, and I doubt many could go back to their previous jobs.

You guys are jealous of people who quit previous aviation jobs, and were thrown out of training, and probably were unable to go back to their previous jobs, then were given a choice between 10,000 ish per year pay before tax, or having health insurance by the company and unemployment paid out?
I’m glad they have the 20 hour per month option if they can’t qualify for unemployment and it’s good the company gave it to them, but it’s enough to survive and that’s it.

Not banking on it, but it was a factor for my decision when considering investing in a career change. Before covid there was value on predicting by what age I should make it to a major (be it legacy or lcc). I never planned on leaving completely from my 9 day a month firefighter career to go to a regional and have to upgrade and work open time to make what I am already making right now.
Its not a set in stone prediction, but within a few years or by a certain age was factored into my decision to start the investment for flight training back in 2017. Of course now any prediction of pilot career advancement is out the window.

If I ever decide and have the opportunity to move on to a major, I'll probably buy that boat and airplane and other toys that I hope will make me happy but that in the end, won't. If you came into aviation on the promise of a $300k salary instead of a love for flying, you made the wrong move.

Oh man, don't come to this career for the money. If you aren't happy with $100-$120k/year as a regional captain, you should go back to your old career now before it's too late. I'm really happy here. I'm treated more than fairly. My kids are mostly grown and I don't feel like I'm missing out on their formative years while I'm gone. Plus the time apart helps my wife and I have more patience with each other when I'm home. I'm not buying any boats or airplanes or third homes for my second mistress, but my wife also works (and wants to work) and between us we live comfortably. And I enjoy coming to work every day.

Let me clarify. Passion doesn’t belong on the labor side. When management knows you love your work they know they can convince you to do it for less. I for one only became a pilot for the potential of a decent salary without having to work very hard. I’m lazy. It fit. Here I am.
