Default Q3

I didn’t hear anything interesting in the call. Some cryptic talk about 2022. Spending 30 million on reliability issues on the 200/700 (aka 550?). Leasing planes to TSH.
Continuing talks with mrj.

Doesn't sound like we want to fly 550’s more “let someone else do it will lease them the aircraft”. We own 1/3 our fleet outright. All debt is in aircraft and the debt expires with the flying contracts so no risk, 200’s are in high demand we keep adding more. They will be around atleast 8 years maybe more..
Hint at new aircraft order. Lots of d XJT assets to sell/lease.buying more engines to lease to Delta. We still have 12 more CRJ’s coming and about 16 ERJ’s next year.

That was my take..

Several investors asked about the 550 in the call-in session.
Sounded like they're not sold on the 550 or its economics. Just looking at its numbers I don't see how you fly it farther than 1 hour with :45 res and :15 contingency. Anymore fuel and your bumping pax, no bueno.

Ok, I need this explained to me. Isn't the 550 just a 700 with 16 seats removed and a first class cabin integrated? How could that possibly lead to a range of an hour or less?

To keep operating cost low. They lower the max TO weight by 10k lbs... not sure what the max landing weight went down to. But it really pitches the fuel...

CRJ700 MTOW = 75,000
CRJ550 MTOW = 65,000
United 50 seat scope has a max weight of 65,000.

Using theoretical full loads with winter weights, assuming a BOW of 44,500lbs:

CRJ700: 70 pax x 185 + 70 bags x 30
= 15,050lbs
ZFW = 59550
Fuel capacity = 15,450lbs

CRJ550: 50 pax x 185 + 50 x 30
= 10,750lbs
ZFW = 55250
Fuel capacity = 9750lbs

That’s quite a substantial hit of about 1h40m of flight time with relatively full loads.

Bump up the numbers to max zero fuel weight of 62,300lbs (I cant foresee the 550 getting up this high with only 50 seats but you never know):

CRJ700 Max fuel load = 12,700lbs
CRJ550 Max fuel load = 2,700lbs*

There should not be a limitation on Max structural landing , but maybe a GoJet pilot could answer that.

* Edit: looking at the Bombardier website, it looks like the CRJ550 max ZFW is 59,000, Max landing weight 61,000lbs, and max payload 15,545lbs.

*So at max ZFW, you get 6000lbs of fuel, which is not much...

Wow, that's interesting stuff. I didn't realize any of this.

One question and one point.
Is the BOW really staying the same?
The bags will probably be in the 30 range for 50 pax and ample carryon space.

Sure subtracting 20 pax, -1000 lbs in bag weight and a probable lower BOW shouldnt cover the 10k MTOW reduction which will require fuel to take the hit but I don’t think it will be THAT bad.

The 550 isn’t really a solution to the 50 seat replacement problem. It’s a stopgap and a way for UA to try and manipulate their pilots.

OO would be wise to avoid this lipstick-covered pig.

I don’t know what the BOW weight will be. They remove 20 seats, but the floor needs to be reinforced where they added the closets. And they added a snack bar. So I imagine a slight reduction in BOW but I can’t say until someone posts the numbers.

Obviously, the CRJ550 won’t be used for OKC-SFO or anything like that.
