United is growing the LAX 737 base to the second largest 737 base after EWR for next summer. In turn, they are reducing the regional flying in the base substantially, mainly on the CRJ. By summer, it’s going to have cratered quite a bit.

Rumor on the UA side was LA wants to go all RNP approaches by a certain date.

CRJ doesn’t have the capability, 175 does.

The west coast flying has always been more suited for the 175 with its VNAV and RNP capabilities. Everything seems to be “descend via” on the west, “descend to FL XXX” on the east coast.

It probably has more to do with the fact that you have more competition on the west coast. Showing up with a 175 makes you a lot more attractive than showing up with a CRJ. Showing up with a CRJ in Cody or Paducah for a short hop to DEN or ORD since the alternative would be driving a car.

gate space. It’s limited. When they push more mainline aircraft in, they have to reduce the regional flying. Same thing happening on east coast. Mainline aircraft replacing regional. Kirby hasn’t been trying to hide it either

My recruiter gave me a gouge packet to study when I was invited for an interview in 2019. You may want to ask him/her.

Regional lift is shrinking. Could have nothing to do with removing crj’s from lax as much as an increased ability to put 737’s there.

More space being taken up by mainline will be the best thing I could ever see. I will sit back and watch the show when the regional market share is slashed substantially. Can't wait to see the anti union regional lifers start complaining about quality of life....

They will have to slash it with dwindling pilot supply. Getting hired with a major now is the only way off a sinking ship. As the flying at regionals gets crushed, those left behind will only go down with the ship. And it will be the lifers…..hanging on for dear life as their QOL gets eroded and the ship sinks deeper and deeper.

If i had to put money on anyone surviving and thriving it’s skywest.

the problem is retaining captains and lca’s. The lack of a union gives enormous flexibility to retain LCA’s plus the significant lifer component is unique.

and once the chaos really starts skywest will probably have a big recruitment advantage too
