career regional pilot vs. stepping stone

I said "at one time". Obviously not the case now, only XJT lifers are older than about 62.

When the music stops (and it will) where would you rather find a chair? If you are qualified, probably a major with a track record of not pulling out chairs. If you're not, I cannot think of a better regional to hang your hat for a few than SkyWest.

I enjoyed my 11yrs at SkyWest, but was ready to move on. Who knows what the furure holds, but the regionals will eventully shrink. I would guess that the top 800 are not going to leave in large numbers.

I was SKYW from 99-03 and absolutely hated it by the end. Not hated the company, but hated the lifestyle. All I ever was able to hold (we had hard lines then) was 4 x 4 day trips per month. I lived in domicile and still felt my entire life was out of a suitcase. And I don’t recall even ever taking a long vacation.
I bailed for the first place that said Yes and am really glad I ended up at FDX. Not that I enjoy flying 12 day trips (yes FedEX still has lots of these) but the upside is you only do 1 x of those for the month and you’re done. Makes commuting easy too.
I wouldn’t advise anyone younger than 45 to enter into any regional with the goal of making it a career destination.
