Default Pilots at Skywest SAN domicile

I'm a soon to be retired USAF pilot looking for something to do, but only if it's in the San Diego area. Flying is just a hobby and has never been a dream jay-oh-bee for me. What's the chance of getting based in SAN right off the bat? What's the route and schedule like for guys based there? Under no circumstance will I do the commuting thing.

Thanks for any info.

I would suggest staying away from the airlines then.

Plenty of 135/91 gigs in the area I'm sure, especially if you're just looking for a hobby.

I don't believe this is true. I believe a new hire in August was awarded SAN in training.

You should be able to get any skw base as an FO within a matter of months. Is it worth commuting briefly to be where you want to be?

That said, upgrade will be more than five years.

If flying is "just a hobby", you won't last long in this industry. I would recommend looking at 91 or 135 operators.

How many part 135 gigs in that area are part time though? Also in order to get a 91 gig, you often have to know someone to get your foot in the door.

Go buy a 172 if it’s just a hobby. Regional airline flying/lifestyle totally burns guys like you out quick.

Most junior FO based in SAN has been at the company for 2 months. So they are still in training and will never have to commute. That being said, reserve will probably be a bit longer there - I'd guess 6 months. And like those above have said, holding CA there is 5.5 years right now. You'd have to commute if you wanted to upgrade before that.
