I was there. I've seen a few smoking hulks shortly after a mishap where no one got seriously hurt (all FDX strangely enough), but have never seen one actually go in.
It was very apparent that they wouldn't be pulling someone still living out of what was left of that plane. I didn't see the initial impact since I was primarily watching my son climb on police equipment, but I did see it come to a stop. The fire was quite intense, and the 1:45 it took for CFR which was posted very nearby felt like an eternity.
He was doing the demo with his mentor, Gary Ward. I really felt for Gary having to loiter watching this all play out. You can see him do a couple loops above the wreckage not long after he came to a stop. Not sure if that was investigating what happened, trying to distract the crowd, or a salute to his friend.
I cannot describe how eerie it was being among 15,000 other people walking out to our cars in absolute silence.
RIP. He did a fantastic solo demo earlier in the day.

From other people attending the show and in the airshow circuit - it was apparent to them that he didn't even know that Greg had crashed until quite few moments after the mishap when the show's air boss informed him.
It was nearly 18+ years when I first had the experience of being an 'on scene' commander, and fortunately my lead survived the mishap, but it was all business in my case.
I was at the Reno Air Races the year that a P-51 lost part of a wing and augured in and I know what you mean by the strange feeling and silence among the spectators after such an event.
Condolences to the family, friends, and airshow peers.

I've heard other people ask why he kept performing after the mishap.

Sounds like it - one wouldn't generally be scanning the ground for that - it would be easy to miss when continuing with the sequence.
Friend and Fellow Pilot Talks About Atlanta Airshow Crash
Ward kept flying and became confused when he didn’t hear Connell talking back to him via radio.
“I stayed airborne another five minutes then they finally cleared me to land and so it was not until I landed and got out of my airplane to find out really how bad it was,” Ward said.
