Umm are you 121? The airplane's FMS knows how far it can fly under given conditions and would tell you if it didn't have the range.

Overwater cert would require special equipment like portable ELTs, rafts, etc.

ETOPS has more to do with MX...inspection intervals, possibly reduced TBO on some parts, increased service intervals for some things. It's not about how far the plane can fly, it's about reducing the (already very low) risk of engine failure.

This was a regulatory screwup, the odds of ETOPS vs. non-ETOPS making a difference in safety on one flight is very very low.

Aircraft don't know if they are certified or not. They can do many things the paperwork doesn't support.

Paperwork is the subject of at least 25 percent of NASA forms.

Some ETOPS aircraft do have a certain extra layer of redundancy (HDG's on ETOPS 757's but not non-ETOPS ...) Don't know about the A321.
