Still waiting for him to get back. He is going to check around at work. I did some research last night and I did see FMS provisions in the ACARS spec. Found it in an online google book. That doesn't necessarily mean that they have ever been used.

Do the waypoints allegedly overflown correspond with any of the arrivals into Kuala Lumpur or its alternates? My Jepp coverage doesn't have it .

Had an NTSB investigator once tell me they had gotten useable data from 7 loops deep from a CVR tape.

Mods can anything be done here?
Unfortunately, that's not the (main) problem. The issue here (in this incident) is that there's other forums (not so much this one, thankfully) where people trying to impress reveal information about the aircraft, how to 'turn this off' or how to 'disengage that' etc etc, thereby inadvertently and foolishly making things easier for the bad guys.

And then there's the media, throwing around big $$s, booking sim time to actually demonstrate how to do some of those things (member Timbo mentioned something about CNN doing exactly that and it's just one example).

I don't know why (almost exclusively ignorant) people keep talking and talking and talking nonsense when clearly there's virtually zero evidence to support any particular theory. It's a circus, all over the world.

That is called "News", they sell it everyday and if they don't have any they just make it up as they go.

The bad guys don't need to read info on the forums, they can download a complete 777 Flight Crew Operations Manual with a simple Google search. I just did...1696 pages.

This business of the waypoints being programmed into the FMS prior to the last ATC call is unofficial. It's a leak to the media from some unknown source, so I would discount it until it is confirmed. So many of these leaks have turned out to be a crock.

The media are like an echo chamber, repeating the same speculation over and over until they start to hear their own speculation reported by other media outlets, then they take it as fact.

I was watching Captain Les Abend on CNN earlier. He was quite measured and sensible in his comments. Definitely one of the better commentators.

Agree, does he get paid a fee to be on TV ? A SAG card ? Is it OK

It's pretty obvious that some of the more ridiculous questions and theories are by journalism dropouts.

Unfortunately, there is no means to screen them. Caveat emptor....it's a free site, and the Mods work for free.

The posers always out themselves in due course.

The media is very short on credible sources for this story so at least if they are here they are listening to actual pilots - I think that is a good thing. I'm a psyc prof, not a pilot, and very interested in how behavior fits into whatever happened so I am here to learn as well. I don't have a theory because I don't know enough to have one and I am not a pilot.
