The alternate extension would not work either despite one of the guys hanging on the handle with all his weight.

They decided to fly to Canada to belly land at the factory. Enroute, they came up with the idea to electrically depower everything, and it worked. They got the gear down and returned to Stankwell Falls (SBY).
Turned out that the plane was on the production line during the strike at DH and was finished by managers. The safety pin installed in the emergency release during the build had never been removed during the final finish up prior to delivery.
I know NOTHING of the -8s systems, but I am confused (if I'm reading it right, how electrically de-powering everything, helped to actually physically remove a safety pin. Was the safety pin electrically held in place?

If I had to guess (it's been a while), the emergency pin was preventing the pilots from using the emergency extension pull handle in the floor, like they normally would after a malfunction of the normal gear extension system. But maybe powering everything down reset the <insert forgotten name of system that sequences the gear doors and landing gear> and it worked properly the second time.

Nah, you read too deeply...NO WAY it was my poor writing skills!!!

The depowering allowed them to get the normal system back. It was when they got back and Maintenance and the Feds started digging as to why the emergency system wouldn't work that they found the safety pin was still installed.

I love crew room gossip. I walked in and overheard a conversation about the PSA CRJ that was gear up in EWR.

Anyway, nice job to the crew!

Thanks for the clarification.
And yes - good job crew.

Anybody see this yet? Video - Breaking News Videos from CNN.com

I am trying to watch this on my tablet, but it is running terribly slowly! It seems the woman was/is convinced this was a "crash." I am still waiting to hear what the crew said over the PA, but gosh, just because the gear won't come down doesn't mean you're gonna die.

OK, so the lady says the captain yelled "crash, crash, crash, crash, crash" over the PA just before touch down....seems like an unlikely thing to "yell" at the pax, but given her state of mind who knows?

I am going to assume the pax were briefed by the crew more in depth than the interview showed, but I wasn't there. I empathize with the pax being scared, but the video seemed a bit overly dramatic for the nature of the problem. I guess that is what sells.

Sounds like a job well done by the "US Airways" crew....ya'll will be getting paid according to US Airways pay scales, right?

Probably someone was saying "brace", but people will make up things to fill in the gaps in their mind. It's the same with almost any tragic event. Ask 3 people what happened and what was said and you'll get 3 completely different stories. This is how people come up with various alternate explanations and versions of reality. Basic human defense mechanisms to make a tragic event emotionally satisfying.

Yeah, I don't want to come off as belittling someone's feelings. I am surprised the take away for her was that she was going to die and this was a crash. I really wonder what was briefed and how that briefing was processed in the minds of the pax.

Finally, it's nice to know she had kind words for the crew.

I'm sorry, but I can't help but laugh at this. I got about halfway through before she started bringing up 9/11 and that's when I had to turn it off. She's just out to make a quick buck from USAirways. That wasn't a crash. That was a textbook gear up landing. The pilots did the right thing & everyone survived. I am willing to bet the landing was just as smooth as any other dash 8 landing too.
