Yes, good job but I would expect nothing less from a pilot of that caliber.

A safe off-airport outcome should be the norm in most ASEL engine-out scenarios, unless it's IMC to the deck or night over terrain...which is why I no longer fly ASEL in the later conditions.

Man, I agree. I was giving dual to a commercial student at night recently and he asked what to do if the engine quits. I told him the truth, it's crazy flying around in these things at night/IMC, and we are risking our butts. I am at point now where the risk is not worth it any more.

Here's one of the best off-airport landings, 25 years ago by a 737:

... or... unless the PT-6 engine oil covers the entire windshield, creating IMC of an entirely different making, ceiling to deck.

Forgive me, but I still grieve...

We often discuss this at my current job, where one aircraft we fly is ASEL. I often struggle with the idea. We all flew/trained ASEL at night. Specifically, all my night requirements were done in northern AZ, which is all over heavy terrain. Looking back, the risk is high, but we did it. Tough call, and if given the option, I now opt out, but if the mission needs to be done and the wx is good, I'll press. Tough call.

One looks out the side. Problem solved.
