I'm shocked that the government would gloss over safety to implement a device that can be easily fooled, cost hundreds of millions to implement, and serves no true purpose other than to add to the allusion of security.

Or not.

I, for one, could not agree more. Just MHO, I'm not shocked that some would not care about safety or the potential long term effects of using this barely tested technology. Becasue, as you have stated, the vast majority care only about the "appearance" of security not actual security. Just my two shekels, I could be wrong.

Actual security is not achievable at anything remotely like a practical cost.

But the appearance of security, and some randomness has done a pretty good job since 9/11. It forced the nad guys to resort to underwear and shoe bombs which turned out to be slightly beyond their technical means. If those to clowns had walked on with attache cases full of SEMTEX, probably a diffferent outcome.

What we have does keep kalishnikovs and rollaboards full of HE off of our airplanes.

Randomness and unpredictability are critical, this is a straight out of AT military doctrine. Annoying for pax, but the TSA can't get too stagnant or the bad guys might find a loophole.
