YouTube - Raw Video: Military Releases C-17 Crash Footage

For those who have heard the cockpit voice recorder and seen the rest of the video, this is sickening.

CVR available only through AF Safety channels I assume?

Yes. I'm surprised they released this much.

Question for you heavy guys, based on that video. Obviously this guy did everything he could, but I can't help but wonder...

Near then end, why not unload the wings a bit and roll back to level, then bring the nose back up. From the third person camera view, it appeared they would have had the altitude to do this (not the case in the infamous B-52 crash incident). It looks like they kept the back pressure in, keeping the wings loaded, which made rolling out of the bank impossible. Could this have been panic, or is there a technical phenomenon that I'm not considering that prevented this?

High wing loading is the only reason I can think of that the plane wasn't able to be rolled level. I supposed I'll eventually have access to the CVR, but I try to learn from these types of things.

Detpilot:

There is nothing to learn from the CVR. This video is convincing evidence of how not to fly heavy aircraft. Surprisingly there is very little said on the CVR of any value other than hearing someone's friend, husband, brother, dad, or son's last words.

The big picture here is, don't exceed your aircraft's capabilities. And if you ever get near a stall, or perhaps inadvertently into a deep stall, immediately initiate recovery procedures.

Understood. The odd thing to me, is that up to the end of the video, when they're losing altitude rapidly, the aircraft's performance (while spectacular) doesn't look any more extreme than the other C-17 demo's I've seen. I was also under the impression that the C-17's fly by wire had airbus style protections from stalling, etc... but obviously not. Thanks for the insight.

The difference being, in this situation, the aircraft was way too slow for a clean wing and banked too high (nearly wings vertical). The aircraft was rapidly put into a deep stall and initial stall warnings were ignored.

How many C-17s have been lost due to enemy fire?

If you check out the YouTube video, at 52 to 53 seconds you can see the left wing aileron and lift dumpers fully activated. It looks like that's exactly what he was trying to do.

I guess once you're in a stall with the wings vertical there's not much you can do.

The only thing more sickening than the video, are the comments.
