He never would have held a line and would have been miserable commuting to reserve. Trust me, I know.
One must also consider that prior to 9/11, F/O's made decent money. In 2001 I made more money as a USAirways A-320 F/O, than I did as a 737 Captain in 2008, don't even get into work rules and contract. It had been my understanding that by late 2002, every USAirways pilot on property had once been a Captain.

A big DC-9 or 10. Shows how ignorant the public is. They will never understand anything in this business other than finding cheap airfares.

On another note, I praise the Captain of that flight. But where is the credit for the FO and flight attendants? The media doesn't even acknowledge them. They all were instrumental in the outcome. The Captain would have never been able to do that by himself. Again, public ignorance in thinking that only the captain flies the airplane and the FO is just a button pusher.
Give it a rest! You can't expect somebody from the General Public to look up in a split second and identify exactly what kind of airplane it is! There were pilots on these boards initially calling it an RJ. The point was...a BIG airplane just hit the water.

The whole crew has gotten all kinds of praise from the media and all over these forums. But face it...the Captain made the COMMAND decisions that day. Had he decided to try and make TEB and failed, what would you all say then. I bet it would have been " the Captain made a bad decision, he should have ditched in the river".

Everybody did their job that day the way we all train for throughout our flying carreers. The Captain was a Captain that day and that is why he gets the BIG BUCK$! I hope he is flying for 6 or 7 more more years.

I think you misspelled "why he used to get the BIG BUCKS"

This occurred to me watching the USCG loop as they drifted past the Concorde a couple minutes after ditching. Wonder what that would cost, new A-320 price minus the cost to restore it to flying condition?

Related question - if this plane flies again, would you consider it a lucky rabbit's foot, or a cat with 8 lives used up??
A friend on another site said that the guy who is running Family Airlines will buy it once it is on the gear and prettied up so that he can attract more resumes.

I heard one network interviewed a gentleman who was in a hospital bed. He said after getting off the plane, he was talking to the F/O, who asked how he was, and the gentleman said he was very cold. The F/O took his shirt off and gave it to him. They showed the shirt, epaulets and all. Commendable isn't strong enough of a word to describe this crew. They did an absolutely awesome job.
