US Air crash
#321
I flew yesterday out of Las Vegas immediately following the US Air ditching. All the pax had been watching the situation on the CNN monitors at the gate. NEVER saw pax so focused on watching the safety video as we were taxiing. The US Air guys did wonders for our FA's and safety. Everyone was glued. No texting, no reading, no ordering drinks, nothing. Finally!
Give it a week, and they'll be back to status quo.

I wager that once they pull that bird from the Hudson and examine the Flight Deck, there's gonna find some serious pucker marks on the Sheepskin. Probably look like a washcloth that's just been wrung out.
Seriously though You'se Guys and Gals. Ya made us all proud yesterday.
Well Done You !

Engines Anyone
Engines are designed to push the plane through the air. Does anyone know if they are designed to part from their engine pylons if significant force is applied the opposite way?
My thoughts on this are....They obiviously took ditching into consideration into the design of the 320. I think they said both engines came off. This makes sence and I am sure allowed the airplane to remain afloat much longer and at an even keel than it otherwise would have. (they weigh 4,290 lbs dry)

You're on the right track. I'm not a Structural Engineer myself, but you can bet that it was factored into the design.
Also, (not meant to be nit-picking) but they have the V2500 Power Plants I believe. (Source) Rolls-Royce and US Airways Announce Engines and Services Business | Reuters
As far as the floating, I'm leaning towards that fact that the aircraft remained basically an intact and buoyant vessel.

Great job by the whole crew. It reminds me of the video we had to watch during our indoc. It was filmed in the bahamas, and showed a mock ditching. This crew must have paid attention watching it. Makes me proud to have been a US Airways pilot once. Lot's of incidents in this business lately, let's all be careful out there.
