I've always wondered that too.....when I was a kid I remember thinking they could just use the key to go wherever they wanted to whenever they wanted. Obviously not the case.........or is it?

to piggyback earlier, it sounds like passengers too did a great job at not being too panicky.

A friend who was on frequency at the time reported he heard this transmission "we're 500 feet. descending to sea level. heading 224. power's off, gliding. your aircraft."

The ATC tapes should show up pretty quickly.

Default Tangentially...

I hope this hasn't been covered already, but I don't have time to read all the posts. Apologies in advance if a repeat.

I never go into LGB. Are the waterfowl in the area of the airport protected, as in a refuge?

Sounds like it might be time to do some hunting.

I was wondering about this. I have no idea because in my aircraft it's just me, myself, and I, but I am curious as to what the Captains on this board say.

If you were the PNF on this leg, and knew a water landing was imminent, would you let the FO keep it, or would you take it back?

I have never thought much of the airbus but it held together and stayed afloat for a long time. What a great story.

The news claimed that there is a ditching button on the A320. Does anyone know about that?

SkyHigh
Yes Skyhigh...another bus driver was on CNN this morning and he said it bascially closes up everything that would be below the water line...outflow valves, etc. Apparently the MD-11 has one as well.

I had touched down at LGA about a minute or two after 1549 took off. We landed rwy 31 and as we were turning off, I saw it flying pretty low and over the river. I thought it might be inbound to EWR but it looked too close. Then I thought perhaps it was landing LGA but had come in from the north. Traffic from the north landing rwy 31 are typically vectored over the LGA VOR then south down the river and back around for the visual. So I thought nothing of it...but I also noticed the fire trucks by the threshold of rwy 13.

About 10 mins later when I got to my car, my brother texted me the news and I was in disbelief because at that time, nothing out of the ordinary was going on at or around LGA. Then I put it all together and realized the plane I saw was in fact 1549. Needless to say Im so proud of our profession and EVERYONE, crew, pax, and rescue workers who made this water landing a sucess.

Default Green Dot!

Of all the twin-jets I've flown, I'd rather be in an A-320 for dual engine flame-out than any other. Green-Dot should have been a great aid to this crew, not to mention a rat powerring hydraulics and electrics. Just like the guys who dead-sticked Lajes. Glad he wasn't in the 737-300 that I flew this morning.

The BA 777 that had both engines fail in 1/08, the FO landed it. It depends on the captain and the situation. My guess is that the captain landed this one but the FO flew it the majority of the time.

Great job for both of them. The news has glorified the pilots' skills and I find it unfortunate that they don't do it more often. The CAL crash in Denver had 0 fatalities and the pilots' claim it was windshear but still it was never mentioned that the pilots were heros or acted properly. In fact, CAL is already being sued before the investigation is complete. I am predicting some dirtbag on the flight yesterday has already retained a lawyer.
