WOW... one of the anchors on a news crew in CLT where the plane was heading learned his father was on board that flight while he was covering it!! That's what you'd call ironic ... ok, well I'm just glad everyone is alright!!!

They say "the pilot" walked up and down the isle twice before he left the aircraft just to make sure everyone. That's one heck of a pilot! My hats off to him! If I ever meet him, his beers are on me for the night!

Why wouldn't you say something populist when you have a shot at a 3 second sound bite on national news?

It's all lip service until the same level of support is offered when PILOT GROUPS negotiate a fair contract which may include a pilot strike. Until then it's all fluff.

- sorry for the thread drift -

I don't know who 'Pete' is...but I imagine anything said at this point could be used against you in a court of law. Better to stay quite in public.

HSLD, I'm going to give you an infraction for thread drift, apologies not withstanding.

Seriously, perhaps this crash can serve as a catalyst for a discussion of the pilot profession in general and contract/pay in particular. There is no question that but for the skill of the pilots, the result today on the Hudson River might well have been different. It's time for a re-examination of what this profession is all about.

Nice graphic on flightaware of the actual flight track of this flight.

Note the "diverted" designation. Seems like a bit of an understatement.

FlightAware > Live Flight Tracker > US Airways #1549

They logged their first Airbus water landing on the west side of Manhattan near the Intrepid carrier floating museum.

Absolutely amazing. What a job well done.

No doubt today's accident could have had a much different outcome and any discussion of pay and benefits has to be against the backdrop of qualified, competent, experienced, and professional pilots.

If you're going to get paid the big bucks, you have to be able to bring the goods - and today the US Air crew made us all proud.

Every person on that plane is alive because of that crew. Infact, just about every person was uninjured. Its really a shame that lawyers will create lawsuits against them just for $$$. Pretty pathetic.

Bird strikes are more common than you think... A few years back when I was a Jetstream driver we flew into a flock of seagulls and lost the right engine immidiately after take off. Once we diverted (couldn't get back in for WX) and landed again, maintenance counted 9 large dents all over the airplane including one only 2 inches from the left engine intake... Flocks of birds are a serious threat to aviation...

Those guys/gals did an incredible job today!
