I'm also guessing you think being a pilot requires one to pass an astronaut physical.
wow somebody got triggered real fast…

We should roll back FAA regulations and make it easier for the FAA to take your medical while pushing pilots to self medicate/conceal medical conditions is an absurd argument.

Good morning everyone & welcome aboard, skipper Joe here. Clear & a million, nothing but smooth rides reported up ahead. Why you can see almost all the way to…to…CARAMBA..the godhead of Chester!! Pull the fire switches. Wank off in a holding cell. Cry to the wife. If only the faa wasn’t so backwards.

I'm taking Tylenol right now.

Taking shrooms and grabbing T-handles doesn’t quite fit your narrative here. Dude is asking for help after jeopardizing the lives of many. Ask for help if you need it, don’t come begging for it in some sob media piece after losing your sh1t in the Jumpseat. GMAFB.

That comment specifically references the poster who said recent changes to the FAA guidelines allowing some mental health related meds should be rolled back and anyone on those meds should lose medicals. And not just until their issue is corrected. Lose it forever. Try to keep up

Pilot accused of trying to shut down plane engines was afraid to report depression, colleagues say - OPB

“I had brought up during that, I was like, ‘Maybe you should talk to somebody,’” said Stretch, who also asked her husband if he could take medication for his mental health struggles. “And then he expressed to me, ‘Sarah, I can’t be out of work. We have to pay a mortgage. If I go do that, I have to go through all these other hoops …and we can’t afford to do that.’”
He could have gone out on disability with a path to fly again, but couldn't afford it. Well, now he has no flying job and is obviously able to afford it. Hopefully, others take note.

Disability is better than dead
Disability is better than fired

Lets not forget Alaska, unlike most other airlines, currenty does not have a limit on mental disability; at least not one I can find in the contract.

You make really good points, however, when you are in the midst of a mental health crisis, you aren't always making the best decisions. After all, "it'll pass" or "it's not that bad" or "I can handle this" are easy excuses, especially for problem solver, type A personalities that are wide-spread in this industry. No one thinks they are having a crisis until they start to see the bottom. That applies to those with an addiction mental health crisis. The prospect of losing your medical is scary, especially when the old FAA regulations were terrible at resolving reported mental health issues. And for some, 50% of whatever year pay he's on is substantially less than you think you can afford. I wouldn't look at his current circumstance as they are doing just fine. I commend his wife for standing by her partner even while going through this, but no one really knows how well they are "affording" it.

Depression is hardly uncommon. Psychosis is. Treatment on a patient by patient basis and to what degree aeromedical branch imposes restrictions will rarely satisfy grounded applicants. Nor those who seek questionable therapy like mushroom tea. Walk an accident backwards from a class 1 issuance for just one ineffective, self-discontinued or adverse reaction RX fix, advocates for prematurely relaxing safeguards/standards will vanish overnight.
